The co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons has died. David Lance Arneson, who dreamed up the fantasy game with Gary Gygax in 1974, lost his two-year battle with cancer on Tuesday evening.
The magical world that Arneson created with Dungeons & Dragons spawned books, video games, movies—and a devoted legion of sometimes obsessive fans. A single game of Dungeons & Dragons, in which players pretend to be elves, wizards, dwarves and warlocks, can last for days or even weeks.
Arneson was 61.
