Selena Gomez has channeled her heartbreak into art. In her new album, Rare, the singer, 27, gets candid about her relationship with ex Justin Bieber and admits it took much healing to recover from their years-long toxic romance.
Apart from making references to her longtime love in “Lose You To Love Me” and “Look At Her Now,” Gomez also seemingly alludes to Bieber, 25, in “Vulnerable,” “People You Know,” Let Me Get Me,” “Crowded Room,” “Kinda Crazy,” “Cut You Off,” “A Sweeter Place,” “Dance Again” and “Rare.”
Just in time for the Friday, January 10, release of her album, RadarOnline.com has broken down all the fiery lyrics.
In “Vulnerable,” the pop diva seems to reference her and Bieber’s rocky on-and-off relationship, which lasted about four years and ended in him dumping her to marry Hailey Baldwin.
"If I give you every piece of me, I know that you could drop it / Give you the chance, I know that you could take advantage once you got it," she sings. "If I open up my heart to you, I know that you could lock it / Throw away the key and keep it there forever in your pocket."
She also addresses her passionate attachment to him, which ultimately led to her hanging on to their love despite their many issues.
"If I show you all my demons, and we dive into the deep end / Would we crash and burn like every time before?" she continues. "I would tell you all my secrets, wrap your arms around my weakness / If the only other option's letting go."
In “People You Know,” Gomez again slams Bieber for breaking her heart and replacing her with Baldwin, 23, just two months after their 2018 split.
"So many wasted nights with you / I still could taste it. I hate it, wish I could take it back 'cause we use to be close / But people can go / From people you know to people you don't. / And what hurts the most is people can go / From people you know to people you don't,” she sings. "When it was good, we were on fire / Now I'm breathin' ashes and dust / I always wanna get higher / I never know when enough is enough."
In “Crowded Room,” a song featuring 6lack, Gomez seems to recall how she felt at the start of her relationship with Bieber — when both stars were just teens making it big in the industry.
"It started polite, out on thin ice / Till you came over to break it / I threw you a line and you were mine / Yeah, I was afraid, but you made it safe / I guess that is our combination / Said you feel lost, well, so do I,” she sings. "So won't you call me in the morning? / I think that you should call me in the morning / If you feel the same, 'cause / Baby, it's just me and you."
Gomez gets candid about the dark parts of love in “Kinda Crazy,” and even seemingly accuses Bieber of acting shady. Fans recall the “Sorry” singer was slammed for allegedly cheating on Gomez various times during their relationship, and in 2016, Gomez blasted him as unfaithful during a heated Instagram fight when he was dating Sofia Richie!
“I think you're kind of crazy / And not the good kind, baby / 'Cause you're actin' super shady / You know it, you know it / Been dodgin' phone calls lately / But still textin' me, 'Baby' / Yeah, I think you're kind of crazy / You know it, you know it / You've been lyin' just for fun / Luckily, no damage done / But now I see you're kind of crazy / You know it, you know it,” she sings in the track.

The rest of her songs seem to symbolize her journey to heal.
In “Let Me Get Me,” Gomez seems to realize that she no longer wants to continue living and loving the way she has been.
"No self-sabotage, no letting my thoughts run. Me and the spiral are done / Burn this camouflage I've been wearing for months / Tryna let a little happy in for once,” she sings. "Diving in ferociously, dancing intimately, I'm so connected to me / In the dark, I'm letting go, so anonymously / I guess this is what it feels like to be free."
In “Cut You Off,” Gomez sheds away all the pain she got from the relationship and starts fresh.
“Pull up to the mirror staring at my face / Gotta chop, chop all the extra weight I’ve been carrying for fourteen-hundred-sixty days,” she sings, possibly referencing the four years she spent on and off with her famous ex. As fans have pointed out, four years equals 1,460 days exactly.
"And I might as well just tell you while I'm drunk, yeah / The truth is that I think I've had enough / Professionally messin' with my trust / How could I confuse that sh*t for love?" she sings. "So I gotta get you out my head now / I just cut you off,” she continues.
In "Rare," she seems to recognize her wroth following years of low self-esteem and bad romantic decisions.
"It feels like you don't care / Why don't you recognize I'm so rare? / Always there / You don't do the same for me, that's not fair / I don't have it all / I'm not claiming to / But I know that I’m special (So special), yeah / And I’ll bet there's somebody else out there / To tell me I’m rare / To make me feel rare," she sings.
In “A Sweeter Place,” Gomez seems to finally move on.
"You really wanna know where I've been all this time / So let me tell ya," she sings. "Got two feet on the ground and felt what real is like / What it was like livin' out of the scene, out in the water / Learnin' to breathe / Up in the clouds, far from the crowds."
"We will find our way, we'll find the things we seek / Ooh we, you see I'm mesmerized," Kid Cudi adds. "Place is just for me and I am cutting ties / Goodbye."
As RadarOnline.com readers know, Bieber has not responded to Gomez’s revenge tracks, but is currently working on al album of his own. Following months of depression due to his Lyme disease diagnosis, the now-married hunk released is single “Yummy.”
Gomez has not spoken much of her dating life since her split with Bieber, but in a recent interview with WSJ. Magazine she admitted she’s been single for “over two years” and is open to whatever new love comes her way.
