Revealed: Amanda Knox's Ex-Lover Raffaele Sollecito Recently Asked Her To Marry Him -- So He Could Avoid More Jail Time!

Star-crossed lovers Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito captivated the world when they were both tried in Italian court for the 2007 murder of Knox's roommate, Meredith Kercher.

Nearly seven years later, RadarOnline.com has learned, Sollecito FINALLY proposed to his former girlfriend -- all so that he could potentially flee to the United States and avoid serving more jail time!

Sollecito made the desperate plea as he and Knox await potential new convictions in a retrial of their case by the Italian courts. (Their previous murder convictions were overturned in 2011.)

Knox has said she plans to be a "fugitive" if re-convicted and will attempt to stay in the U.S., but her former boyfriend -- an Italian citizen -- could be facing serious jail time.

And so, as RadarOnline.com has learned, Sollecito concocted a sensational plan to save himself from more jail time by obtaining U.S. citizenship through marriage -- to Knox.

“Raffaele told me that when he had been in Seattle in March, his lawyers and Amanda’s lawyers had a meeting where he had proposed the idea of the two of them marrying,” Sollecito’s ex-girlfriend, Kelsey Kay, confirmed to RadarOnline.com in an exclusive interview. "It would’ve been natural to the public that the two of them got married."

Though to some, it might seem like a potential happy ending after years of heartache for the pair, Kay revealed that Sollecito’s proposal was a blatant attempt to save his own skin.

“Raffaele proposed the idea to Amanda and her lawyers so that he could obtain citizenship in the United States and stay,” Kay claimed, in the interview. Watch it below.

Knox, however, is already in another committed relationship, with classical guitarist James Terrano.

“It’s important to me that people know … what happened between him and Amanda,” Kay says. “And what had happened -- according to him -- is in the meeting, he had proposed marriage and that she had told him that she was seeing someone for the past few years and that it wasn’t an option.”
