Their lives were intrinsically tied together when they were both found guilty of the murder of a British student, and now Amanda Knox's Italian ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito has made a surprise admission regarding the former lovers' reunion in Seattle earlier this year that brought back painful memories.

"When I looked at her I got stuck a little bit, I was nervous," Sollecito told ABC's Katie Couric in an interview on Tuesday. "I still had the psychological wounds of this nightmare that passed in prison. Her image brought up the image of the nightmare.

"After she hugged me, I realized that Amanda is the Amanda that I dated for that week," he explained. "She's not the Amanda that was the ghost Amanda during those four years."

The 28-year-old went on to describe his "dreamy" and "intense" nine day romance with Knox, 25, leading up to the fateful day in November 2007 when they were arrested for the brutal killing of Meredith Kercher, who was found with 40 stab wounds and a deep gash in her throat in the apartment she shared with Amanda in Perugia, Italy.

The pair both served four years in an Italian prison before being released last year when their sentences were overturned due to lack of evidence.

Despite Amanda's relationship with new boyfriend James Terrano getting serious, Raffaele revealed that the former lovers still stay in touch.

"We Skype sometimes," he told Katie. "We exchange emails," adding that Knox "sang a song for me during our last Skype conversation."

Sollecito made his rare media appearance on Katie to promote his new tell-all memoir, Honor Bound: My Journey to Hell and Back with Amanda Knox, which reveals both the horror of his prison hell and the"indescribable joy” he felt once they were acquitted for Kercher's death.

Honor Bound: My Journey to Hell and Back with Amanda Knox hits stores Tuesday, September 18.
