A bombshell was dropped on the investigation into Charlie Kirk's assassination after it was revealed that the bullet that killed the conservative commentator did not match murder suspect Tyler Robinson's rifle.

Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer claimed the mismatch wasn't a shock – it was actually to be "expected due to the state of the bullet," RadarOnline.com can reveal.

On Wednesday, April 1, Coffindaffer warned others following the case that the "bullets don't tell the story" in this situation.

"It is really critical that people understand what the ballistics findings mean in Charlie's case," she said via X. "That bullet went into Charlie, did not exit, and was mangled in the process, and became a bullet fragment."

Coffindaffer noted that because the bullet was broken, the casings are more likely to be the key to determining which weapon was used.

"You see there are marks left on a casing (casings hold the bullet) when they are ejected by a gun," she continued. "These are caused by the extractor and ejector of a gun. There are also little impressions made by the firing pin that are unique."

"Can bullets also be linked to a particular gun via examining the rifling striations? Yes, but that requires a bullet to be intact for comparison," she clarified. "Charlie's bullet upon removal was more of a fragment, not a round."

As Radar previously reported, Robinson's defense team filed a motion last Friday to push back court proceedings at least six months due to the recent findings as they continue to gather evidence.

"As these cases indicate, determining the number of contributors to a DNA mixture and determining whether the FBI and the ATF reliably applied validated and correct scientific procedures... is a complicated process which requires the assistance of various types of experts, including forensic biologists, geneticists, system engineers and statisticians, all of whom must review and evaluate," the court filing stated, according to Deseret News.

"The comprehensive review required to determine what is missing will take hundreds of hours," Robinson's attorneys noted in the court documents.

But Coffindaffer pushed back, claiming that the "bullet fragment not matching Tyler's gun is not exculpatory evidence," and was "expected due to the state of the bullet."

The former FBI agent also pointed out that the ammunition was around "eight years old" and "could affect the primers and integrity of the projectiles and their performance."

As Radar previously reported, Kirk – who was also the co-founder of conservative nonprofit Turning Point USA – was murdered on September 10, 2025, during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University in front of a crowd of roughly 3,000 people.

Robinson, 22, was taken into police custody the next day and he was officially charged with aggravated murder on September 16, 2025. If found guilty, he could face the death penalty.
