John Edwards’ string of bad luck continues, with the news that he is suffering from a life threatening illness.
The disgraced 58-year-old former presidential candidate told a judge about his medical condition in an attempt to delay his trial, which he previously had continued because of his requests for more time for preparation and for his daughter Cate’s wedding.
Judge Catherine Eagles did not reveal the specific details of his illness, but after a closed door meeting on Friday said: “Certainly the ends of justice are served by continuance, given the seriousness of his medical condition.”
Edwards was in court and “looked healthy, walking in without assistance,” the Associated Press reported.
He is apparently on medication for the heart condition, which prevents him from driving and the judge said he had three “episodes,” while the defense attorneys have said they have had “difficulty meeting with Edwards to prep for the trial recently due to his health conditions,” according to Politico.com.
The judge noted that Edwards’ condition was treatable and he has a good chance of recovery.
Edwards is accused of conspiring to violate campaign-finance laws for using $1 million from campaign donors to cover up his affair and love child with Rielle Hunter, which was revealed in an exclusive bombshell report from the National Enquirer.
His wife Elizabeth Edwards passed away in 2010 from her long-time battle with cancer, and John lives with their two young children, Emma Claire and Jack.
John spent Christmas with Rielle and their daughter Quinn and was photographed going to church with them, but Rielle was driving the car.
As RadarOnline.com previously reported, he even asked Rielle to move in with him and has proposed to the woman who was responsible for breaking up his marriage to Elizabeth and ending his political career.
