In 2014 the stars spent so much time hooking, breaking and making up that it’s a surprising they found time to do any work! Throw in a few surprise weddings and you have the perfect cocktail for amour. Here’s our look back at some of the highs and lows of the love lives of the rich and famous.
In March 2014 Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband Chris Martin announced they were “consciously uncoupling” after more than a decade of marriage. A statement on the actress’ Goop website read, “It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate.” And the rest of the world was left scratching their heads as to what it means to consciously uncouple.
Another woman’s rubbish is another girl’s treasure? That’s what Paltrow was to learn when – months after she ditched her rock star husband – Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence snapped him up. The Hunger Games actress started stepping out with the “Yellow” singer in the summer.
Jennifer Lawrence nosedived into her relationship with Chris Martin shortly after ending her on-again, off-again romance with British actor Nicholas Hoult. The X-Men co-stars finally parted ways in 2014 after rekindling their romance the year before.
Somewhere hell must be freezing over because in 2014 Hollywood’s most eligible bachelor did something he vowed never to do again – get married. In September George Clooney married Amal Alamuddin in a lavish ceremony in Venice, Italy after a whirlwind romance that saw the Oxford graduate and high-powered attorney knock him off his feet. At a charity dinner, a couple of weeks before they wed, the actor publicly gushed to his future wife, “I love you very much and I can’t wait to be your husband.”
Unfortunately “dem babies” were not able to keep Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon together. In August the TV presenter confirmed he had split from the singer months earlier after six years of marriage. They are currently reportedly hashing out (among other things) custody of their twins Monroe and Moroccan.
No amount of pleading, hand wringing or public crooning was going to make Paula Patton change her mind about ending her marriage to singer Robin Thicke. As far as she was concerned there were no “Blurred Lines” and she filed for divorce in October, ending a romance that began when they met in high school.
The old adage that you should never go back to an old relationship must have passed Katy Perry by. But the singer finally learned and in February broke off her on-off relationship with John Mayer. She told the July issue of Cosmopolitan, “You have to go through the mud in order to find that peaceful place.”
Celebrities who publicly gush about their love are usually left with egg on their face when they eventually call it quits. For months Sherri Shepherd was surprisingly tightlipped about splitting from her husband Lamar Sally in the spring. The actress – who once shared every minutia of their relationship with TV viewers – was still a co-host on The View when the marriage fell apart.
Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber just couldn’t make their young love last and in 2014 they split for good after making up and breaking up several times over. In an interview with a Norwegian radio station in December, Gomez said of her former beau, “I definitely have so much respect and love for him.”
Kisses, cuddles, lovey-dovey Instagram pix and a musical collaboration. That sums up the nature of Ariana Grande’s relationship with Big Sean so far. The rapper and the singer got together this year on the heels of his break-up from fiancée Naya Rivera in April, who – in turn – went on to marry actor Ryan Dorsey in July.
Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo – perhaps pop music’s sweetest couple – broke up in September. But, what at first seemed like an amicable split, was revealed to be anything but when the American Idol star released a sample of a new song (a remix of Drake’s “How Bout Now”) slamming the singer. In December Sparks told E!, “I’m dating myself for sure.”
Call it puppy love but Brooklyn Beckham and Chloe Grace Moretz looked a-dor-able when they started stepping out with each other in Los Angeles in the summer. While the actress hasn’t confirmed that David and Victoria’s firstborn is her boyfriend, she did tell Andy Cohen during an interview on Watch What Happens Live, “I enjoy hanging out with him.”
Fans of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo may have mourned the news that Mama June and Sugar Bear split in September. But that’s nothing in comparison to the uproar that emerged when it was revealed that she allegedly rekindled her romance with convicted child molester Mark Anthony McDaniel, a man her own daughter, Anna Cardwell, accused of sexually abusing her when she was just eight.
In September Amber Rose announced she had split from husband Wiz Khalifa and rumors that both parties had been unfaithful swiftly followed. As the couple hurtled towards a divorce the model took to Twitter to write, “I would never ever ever cheat on my husband in a million years I think u guys know this. Unfortunately my now ex husband can’t say the same…” He also denied cheating.
She may still be nursing the wounds from her split from estranged husband Lamar Odom but that didn’t stop Khloe Kardashian from dating – on and off – French Montana. She parted ways with the rapper for the second time, in December. A source told Us Weekly, “Khloe just wasn’t ready after Lamar and it was getting too serious.”
So far Hank Baskett and Kendra Wilkinson are going to end 2014 as a couple. But they’ve had a bumpy ride this year with allegations that the former NFL star cheated on his Playboy Playmate wife with a transsexual model. Although Wilkinson considered splitting from Baskett, they are apparently soldiering on with their two children in tow.
