They may present themselves as holier than thou at times, but the Duggars, of 19 Kids and Counting fame, have a few skeletons in their closet. Here is a list of even more secrets and scandals of the reality TV Christian clan.
Jana Duggar
Nope, Cinderella isn’t just a children’s story. For Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar’s eldest daughter, Jana it’s real life. When she’s not sewing clothes for her brothers and sisters, babysitting and baking she is doing voluntary work around the community. Meanwhile her younger sisters Jill and Jessa have recently walked down the aisle in fairytale ceremonies.
Jessa Duggar
Speaking of weddings, a Christian blogger recently claimed she allegedly heard Jim Bob ask someone from TLC if they could edit footage of Jessa and Ben Seewald’s nuptials. Apparently, neither he nor his wife Michelle knew the newlyweds planned to have their first kiss behind closed doors away from the prying eyes of guests – and they supposedly want it to look like they were aware of the decision all along.

Duggars
While the Duggars may seem really Godly, the people around them have been tainted with more than just a hint of scandal. Cynthia Jeub – the daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s pals Chris and Wendy – has accused her parents of abuse. The former Kids By The Dozen reality TV star wrote on her website in Oct. 2014, “I was physically abused and I don’t just mean that I’m opposed to spanking.”
Ben Seewald
In July 2014, the Duggars’ future son-in-law Ben Seewald created an online stir by blasting Catholicism on his Facebook page. In the rant that he has since deleted he wrote, “I have nothing against individuals who are Catholic,” but went on to say, “I DO have a problem with the teaching that man can come to God through Mary or any other person besides Jesus.”
Michelle Duggar
It’s hardly scandalous but it’s definitely staggering! In a her TLC blog Michelle admitted their goal for their “monthly food budget is $3,000.” The 19 Kids and Counting mom partly blamed her growing boys for the massive bill saying, “I jokingly say every two hours we have to fill up those hollow legs to make them grow a few more inches.”
Derick Dillard
Despite admitting that they got a little hands-on when they were courting Jim Bob and Michelle weren’t taking any chances when daughter Jill was getting to know her future husband Derick Dillard. The protective parents even sat in on the couple’s online chats.
Jane, Jill, Jessa and Jinger Duggar
Despite being home-schooled the Duggar daughters revealed they still suffered with normal teenage issues, including concerns about their body image. In their tell-all book Growing Up Duggar Jane, Jill, Jessa and Jinger admitted they have had “negative feelings about the girl in the mirror” and have all gone through times “when we’ve felt we need to lose weight.” In the past, mom Michelle admitted she battled bulimia.
Jessa Duggar
In a 2014 post on her Instagram page Jessa Duggar likened the slaughtering of millions of Jews to abortion. Speaking after visiting the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. she wrote – among other things, “The sanctity of human life varies not in sickness or health, poverty or wealth, elderly or pre-born, little or lots of melanin making you darker or lighter skinned or any other factor.”
Meanwhile, Jim Bob drew a link between birth control and miscarriages during a 2014 appearance at the Value Voters Summit. He said, “Something we didn’t know is that the pill can actually allow women to get pregnant, but then it can be aborted. That’s what happened with Michelle … she went on the pill after Josh and then got pregnant, and then the pill actually caused a miscarriage.”
Michelle Duggar
In 2014, Michelle recorded a message campaigning against an anti-discrimination bill that would protect transgender rights in Fayetteville, Arkansas. In the robocall message, the mom warned the proposed ordinance “would allow men – yes I said men – to use women’s and girls’ restrooms, locker rooms, showers, sleeping areas and other areas that are designated for females only.”
Duggars
In 2014, Bill Gothard, a mentor and leader of Basic Life Principles (a conservative Christian organization the Duggar family belonged to) resigned amid allegations he sexually harassed more than 35 young women and teenagers. However, in a statement the Principles board later said an investigation revealed there had been “no criminal activity” but that Gothard “acted in an inappropriate manner.”
