40 Of The Biggest Secrets & Scandals Of 2014!
Dec. 31 2014, Published 7:06 a.m. ET
We’re almost ready to say hello to 2015 but not without taking a look back at 2014. And when it comes to celebrity scandals it has been a bumper year. From Justin Bieber’s multiple brushes with the law to the downfall of “wholesome” stars like Bill Cosby and Stephen Collins here are the outrageous stories that made our heads spin.
It’s not even here yet but Teresa Giudice already knows 2015 is not going to be a good year for her. The Real Housewives of New Jersey star will swap her gaudy jewelry, fake eyelashes and hair extensions for prison scrubs on January 5. Back in October Teresa and hubby Joe Giudice pled guilty to charges that included conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud.
Real Housewives of Atlanta fans were glued to their TV screens in April when the claws came out and fists started flying during the reunion show. Porsha Williams lunged at Kenya Moore after the former beauty queen called her a “dumb ho.” The two tumbled to the ground, Andy Cohen tried hopelessly to break them up and Porsha ended up posing for a mug shot after being slapped with a simple battery misdemeanor charge.
It was “there goes” Honey Boo Boo in October when TLC abruptly cancelled the hit show after pictures emerged of Mama June canoodling with her former flame, convicted child molester Mark McDaniel. The public was sickened when it emerged that the known pedophile allegedly sexually abused June’s own daughter Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell when she was eight, just a year younger than Honey Boo Boo who was nine when the scandal broke.
Did she break the Internet? Nope. But by baring her naked bum and posing completely nude – and full frontal – for Paper magazine Kim Kardashian got lots of what she loves most, attention.
It was a scene that would have fit perfectly on either Maury Povich or Jerry Springer’s stage. But we’ve yet to know what exactly prompted Solange Knowles to kick, hit and shove brother-in-law Jay Z in a New York elevator following a Met Ball after party. Alas, the juicy leaked surveillance video didn’t include any sound. But the silence – along with Beyoncé’s passive reaction during the fight – is defining.
What would Clair Huxtable say? In November Bill Cosby – the legendary comic who enchanted a nation when he played Dr. Huxtable on his hit, The Cosby Show – was accused of allegedly drugging and raping several women over a period of 40 years. The actor’s lawyer frequently denied the allegations that were prompted after comic Hannibal Buress accused Cosby of being a sex offender during his stand-up routine.
What she considered to be an innocent example of childhood exploration, Kevin D. Williamson dubbed “sexual abuse.” Girls’ creator Lena Dunham was horrified in November when the right-wing National Review writer accused her of abusing her younger sister Grace when they were both little. In her book, Not That Kind of Girl the actress described probing her one-year-old sibling’s vagina when she was seven in a bid to compare it to her own. She vehemently denied his “interpretation" and said, “I do not condone any kind of abuse under any circumstances."
In October Hollywood was shocked when an audio tape of Stephen Collins admitting to allegedly exposing himself to girls including one as young as 11 was leaked. The conversation was apparently recorded during a therapy session between Collins and his estranged wife Faye Grant. The fallout was swift and the Seventh Heaven actor was fired from the movie Ted 2.
Is Justin Bieber the new Chris Brown? No, he hasn’t been busted for assaulting his on-off girlfriend Selena Gomez. But in 2014 the Canadian pop star had several run-ins with the law on both sides of the border for egging a neighbor’s home, resisting arrest, allegedly driving under the influence and alleged assault, among other things.
It’s the Hollywood list that 100 female celebrities did not want to be on. In September stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Gabrielle Union, Kirsten Dunst and Kaley Cuoco were horrified when their personal nude selfies were leaked on to the Internet for all to see. An irate Lawrence told Vanity Fair the whole incident was “a sex crime” and Upton’s attorney called it “an outrageous violation of…privacy.”
The lesson of 2014? Be careful what you say because it may come back to haunt you. A recording of Donald Sterling’s racist ramblings during a telephone conversation with his alleged lover V. Stiviano was leaked in April. Pleading with his biracial gal pal not to bring any more black people to his games ultimately cost the L.A. Clippers’ owner the team that he loved.
It wasn’t just the Carter-Knowles whose domestic troubles were caught on CCTV footage. Apparently knocking your future wife out and dragging her unconscious body out of an elevator will – eventually, after months of protest – get you fired from your high profile job. NFL bosses were accused of dragging their heels and initially failing to adequately discipline running back Ray Rice for punching his then-fiancée Janay in a domestic dispute that turned violent.
In February allegations that Woody Allen sexually abused his daughter Dylan Farrow while she was a child surfaced again after nearly 22 years. Hollywood took sides as the director, his former partner Mia Farrow and their children publicly addressed the alleged incident. In a graphic letter to the New York Times, Dylan described how her father allegedly “sexually assaulted” her and Allen broke his silence a week later in the same paper, writing, “Of course, I did not molest Dylan.”
His friend was killed and Tracy Morgan nearly lost his life in June when a Wal-Mart truck – according to witnesses – slammed into the comedian’s limo tour bus. The incident is still not resolved. Morgan is suing the super store chain, while the company’s reps blames the actor and his fellow passengers for not wearing seatbelts. Meanwhile the 30 Rock star’s lawyer says he suffered a “traumatic brain injury.”
Did they or didn’t they; have they or haven’t they? For Jay Z and Beyoncé 2014 was the year gossip columnists were speculating that the rapper allegedly cheated on his wife and that they were heading for the divorce court. Meanwhile, a Brooklyn woman started an online petition to get the stars to comb their daughter Blue Ivy’s hair. The couple never commented on the rumors, but Beyonce’s dad Mathew Knowles said it was all a “Jedi mind trick” to amp up sales for their “On The Run” concert tour.
The lavish wedding of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West was as much about what the three-time bride wore as it was about who didn’t show up. The rapper’s BFF Jay Z and his wife were a no-show as was Kim’s brother Rob who – after having arrived in France for the pre-wedding celebration – turned right around and boarded a flight back to L.A., missing the ceremony altogether.
CeeLo Green’s reputation was in tatters in 2014 after the “F**k You” singer was tried for giving a woman an ecstasy pill and allegedly raping her later that night. He was found not guilty of the sexual assault but caused outrage in September by tweeting, “Women who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!” He later apologized but the damage was done and TBS canceled his reality TV show, The Good Life citing poor ratings.
A leaked video, a joint and two giggling boy band members were not enough to derail One Direction this year. Shot while the lads were on tour in Peru, it showed Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik lighting up a roll-up. Fellow member Liam Payne later went on Twitter to apologize to their fans saying, “We are only in our 20’s sic we all do stupid things at this age.”
Rather than add notches to her bedpost Lindsay Lohan decided to write a list of the famous men she (allegedly) slept with. On the roll call were Justin Timberlake, Adam Levine, Joaquin Phoenix and James Franco, who went on to deny any sexual involvement with the former child star. The list went public in March and in August Lohan told the Daily Mail that “someone must have stolen it” and that she found the whole incident “really violating.”
He may not have slept with Lindsay Lohan but James Franco admits to using “bad judgment” by trying to pick up a 17-year-old girl on Instagram. The mea culpa came in April during an appearance on Live! With Kelly and Michael. In New York to appear in the Broadway show Of Mice and Men, the then 35-year-old flirted with Scottish tourist Lucy Clode asking her – among other things, “Should I rent a room?”
DAILY. BREAKING. CELEBRITY NEWS. ALL FREE.
For the majority of 2014 Amanda Bynes – under the conservatorship of her parents – seemed to be stable, receiving treatment and studying fashion and design in Los Angeles. But in October she began behaving erratically again. She has since accused her father of sexual abuse, retracted the statement, threatened to kill her family and admitted to having bipolar disorder.
_Rihanna
Forget the booty; 2014 was clearly the year of #FreeTheNipple, with stars such as Scout Willis and Rihanna boldly displaying naked female boobs (their own or others) on Instagram. Both ladies were kicked off the social media site as a result. Willis protested the decision by strutting down a New York street while topless, pointing out on xoJane.com that “what is legal by New York state law is not allowed on Instagram.”
There are some male fans of Jennifer Lopez who might think Casper Smart is anything but for allegedly cheating on the bootylicious singer with a transgender model. In June steamy Instagram messages that were allegedly between the backup dancer and Sofie Vissa emerged. By the end of the summer J. Lo had dumped her toy boy lover who denied he had betrayed the mom-of-two.
Kendra Wilkinson’s happy marriage to Hank Baskett seemed to implode in the summer when sultry transsexual Ava London alleged she had slept with the NFL pro – a claim he has strongly denied. The timing of the allegations couldn’t have been worse. The former Playboy star had just given birth to the couple’s second child Alijah when the scandal broke.
Shia LaBeouf checking out of his hotel in New York City
In September Shia LaBeouf pled guilty in a New York court to one count of disorderly conduct. The plea came months after he was arrested for shouting obscenities and causing a scene while watching a performance of the Broadway revival of Cabaret. The Transformers star has been receiving treatment for alcohol abuse ever since the incident, which involved allegedly spitting and cursing at a police officer.
According to court documents Halle Berry’s battle with her ex, Gabriel Aubry, got even dirtier in 2014 with the star alleging her baby daddy called her the N word. The Canadian model was also accused of allegedly dyeing and straightening their daughter Nahla’s hair in a bid to alter her natural appearance. In court documents the Oscar-winner reveals she even took strands of her child’s hair and sent them to a laboratory to prove her suspicions were true.
It was the slap that was heard throughout the dance competition world. When former Dance Mom Kelly Hyland slapped coach Abby Lee Miller around the face Lifetime’s cameras were there to get it on film. For her part the former reality show cast member claims she was defending herself and fans of the series were able to judge for themselves when the episode was finally aired in 2014.
Teresa and Joe Giudice were not the only Real Housewives cast members to be sentenced to prison. Apollo Nida – husband of RHOA’s Phaedra Parks – began serving his eight-year term for bank fraud in the fall. Speaking of his estranged wife, the fitness junkie told People in November, “I despise everything about her, but I still love her.“
It was like a scene straight out of one of those old fashioned Hollywood movies. Two (alleged) love rivals (Justin Bieber and Orlando Bloom) enter a bar, fists start flying and it’s all caught on tape. That’s what happened in an Ibiza restaurant in July when the actor came out swinging, while the pop star’s entourage held him back. Bloom’s estranged wife Miranda Kerr was rumored to be at the heart of the spat.
Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie have all been there (albeit for short spells). But in 2014 it was Chris Brown’s turn to spend time in jail for being naughty. The singer spent 108 days behind bars after violating his probation in relation to the 2009 assault against his ex-girlfriend Rihanna.
“Be a good boy from now on.” That’s what a New York judge told Alec Baldwin after the actor appeared before him in July. The 30 Rock star agreed to pay a fine for getting belligerent with police officers after they stopped him for riding his bike the wrong way down a one-way street.
It hasn’t been a good year for the NFL when it comes to public image. While the Ray Rice debacle was rumbling along, Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson was in hot water for taking a switch to his four-year-old son in May. The running back dodged a felony charge by pleading guilty to reckless assault but, according to police reports, his child displayed cuts and bruises on several parts of his body.
There are certain Hollywood players who have vowed never to work with Penelope Cruz or her husband Javier Bardem again after the Spanish couple spoke out about the Gaza conflict. In July they signed an open letter criticizing Israel’s military action in the region and were swiftly accused of ignorance and anti-Semitism. Bardem later released a statement clarifying his position saying that he has “great respect for the people of Israel.”
It was the ultimate inadvertent faux pas – and an arrogant one at that. Kanye West was widely criticized in September for publicly shaming a fan for not standing up during one of his Australian concerts. Little did he know at the time, but the fan was confined to a wheelchair! Kim Kardashian defended her husband on Instagram by saying, “He asked for everyone to stand up & dance UNLESS they were in a wheel chair.”
“I’m the guy who says ‘jump’ when there’s a guy on top of a building who says, ‘That’s it, I can’t take it anymore…’” Gene Simmons comments from a July interview would come back to haunt him in August following Robin Williams shocking suicide. The Kiss front man quickly released a statement saying he was “sincerely” sorry for the remarks, which were made “in the spur of the moment.”
His mentor is black, as is his best friend so Justin Bieber was left red-faced when old footage emerged of him using the N-word and telling racist jokes when he was a budding star still in his teens. In June the Canadian singer apologized saying, “As a kid, I didn’t understand the power of certain words and how they can hurt.”
Hmm, maybe Khloe Kardashian needs to think before she posts anything on Instagram. The estranged wife of Lamar Odom posted a photo of herself with her sisters Kim and Kourtney, with the caption, “The only KKK to ever let black men in.” She quickly deleted the post but not before people blasted her on social media.
Was Shia LaBeouf raped? That’s what the actor claimed in November in an email to a Dazed & Confused journalist. The former child star alleges that a woman visiting him during his Los Angeles #IAMSORRY art project in February “whipped” his legs “for 10 minutes and then stripped my clothing and proceeded to rape me.”
Kesha
She emerged from rehab determined to remain healthy and beat her eating disorder for good. But just months after Kesha returned to the limelight in 2014 she slapped a lawsuit on her producer and former mentor Dr. Luke alleging that he tried to have sex with her and encouraged her to drink and use drugs – all claims which he has vigorously denied.
Could Juan Pablo Galavis be the most hated Bachelor of all time? The Venezuelan ladies man got off to a bad start by insinuating that gays are “more pervert, in a sense" and sullied his reputation further by allegedly bedding three women on the show and refusing to say “I love you” to the winner Nikki Ferrell, who dumped him after a few short months of dating.
