Britney Spears was addicted to speed when she met Sam Lutfi and he became the "scapegoat" for her bad behavior, Lutfi's attorney told a jury during opening statements in a Los Angeles courtroom Thursday.

Joe Schleimer told jurors that the X Factor judge and his client met at a nightclub after she had been released from rehab. "Britney Spears was addicted to speed, methamphetamine was her drug of choice," the attorney alleged to the stunned courtroom.

Schleimer claimed that before agreeing to become Brit's "manager," Lutfi wanted to bring drug sniffing dogs into the house and she agreed to it. "The dogs found hot spots of drug residue in the carpet and her children crawled on the carpets. He was trying to build a varsity team and that is why he did this. Sam was trying to find top notch people to work with Britney," Schleimer said.

Jurors were also shown pics of a bald Britney Spears going after photographers with an umbrella.

As previously reported, Lutfi is suing Britney and her parents, Lynne and Jamie Spears, for breach of contract, libel and defamation for comments Lynne made in a book about her life. The trial is expected to last nearly three weeks, with Lutfi, Lynne, Jamie and Brit's fiance, Jason Trawick, all scheduled to testify.

Interestingly, before the jury was brought in, Jamie Spears' attorney asked the judge to have Lutfi be seated farther away from where Papa Spears was sitting because there was only one chair between them. The judge denied the request, but Lutfi ended up moving anyway.
