It’s hardly surprising that there is such fascination with the relationship of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth. After their divorce, celebrity watchers wonder what went wrong between a couple who had literally just gotten married.

There are many details that help paint a picture of the hurricane that happened between Hemsworth and Cyrus. The Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth breakup timeline will help make sense of a rocky relationship that, at the beginning, showed such promise.

The couple walked the red carpet for the Vanity Fair Oscar Party putting to rest any rumors suggesting they were done. They were very romantic — even sharing a kiss or two — as they walked the carpet before heading into the annual bash, as reported by Us Weekly.

Cyrus deleted all the images from her Instagram account, which sent internet investigators into a tizzy believing that something was wrong with her relationship with Hemsworth, as chronicled in RadarOnline.com Online. Or perhaps she didn’t care for the internet trolls who went after her for … well, you name it. To counter the rumor machine that had the pair split up because she eliminated a social media account, Hemsworth took to his social media page and released the cutest video of the pair, which caused the public to believe that the couple was as strong as ever.

Luckily nobody was hurt or killed when their Malibu home was completely destroyed by the California wildfires. She described to Howard Stern how her Australian hunk swung into action to save their animals. "He was so incredible. He got all the animals out in his truck. He put two pigs in crates, which I tell you is so hard. He got a lot of action for saving the animals," Miley told Stern on his show. "We had to make sure he knew I was very, very grateful." They’re married! Wait, what? In the rarest of events, a celebrity wedding — centered around a tabloid-heavy couple — managed to pull off romantic nuptials without anyone knowing ahead of time. The wedding took place at their Nashville home, and from all the social media posts — detailed over at OK! — it looked like it was a blast.

Hemsworth and Cyrus announced they were separated, which was shocking. They dated for years, were engaged for long stretches of time, but they were divorced within months. Fans knew there had to be a reason. “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” a rep for Cyrus said in a statement published by RadarOnline.com Online. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. Photos became public of Cyrus moving on with Brody Jenner’s ex Kaitlynn Carter in Lake Como, Italy (where George Clooney has a place). There were rumors that it was Cyrus’ infidelity that broke up the marriage. RadarOnline.com Online reported that Cyrus wanted an “open relationship” and that “she wasn’t ready for one person forever.” For what it’s worth, Cyrus and Carter were seen in L.A. (as chronicled by Us Weekly), but Carter proved to be a rebound and it was over before it truly began.

Hemsworth broke his silence on the matter. As reported by RadarOnline.com Online, he took to Instagram and posted a beautiful sunset pic with the caption, “Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward. This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false. Peace and Love.”

Hemsworth spent an extended holiday in his native Australia with his family, including older brother Chris Hemsworth. A source close to the actor was quoted by Cosmo, “He wants to settle down and have a conventional family including kids, but that couldn’t be further from what Miley is after right now. She made it clear she wanted to be able to have fun with other people — men and women — but it’s always been something he’s had a hard time understanding. Now, it has all become too much and there is no way of making their relationship work at the moment."

A source close to Cyrus told Us Weekly that it was, in fact, Cyrus who ended their love story. "Miley was the one who ended things with Liam," the source reported and added this shocking statement. "They haven’t been together for months.” 

Cyrus released a new song, and its lyrics could not have been more pointed to reflect the overriding sentiment that these are just two crazy kids who drifted apart. In the lyrics for the song “Slide Away” (quoted in Us Weekly), the singer belts out, “Move on, we’re not 17. I’m not who I used to be. You said that everything changed. You’re right, I’m grown now."

Despite what many thought happened, it was Hemsworth who actually filed the divorce paperwork. He cited “irreconcilable differences.” A source was quoted in RadarOnline.com Online saying that “Miley is not who he originally loved anymore and she can’t change, but he just realized he couldn’t be with her like this. He can’t believe what he’s seeing on the internet about her since the break-up.”

Later that day, details emerged from his camp about the divorce filing as well as any immediate plans for the Isn’t It Romantic? star. "Liam’s taking a long break and heading back to Byron Bay to be with his brother and mates, do plenty of surfing and soul-searching," a source told RadarOnline.com Online. "Then he’ll figure out his next move. He’ll still come to LA to do business and shoot movies, but this whole experience has really reinforced to Liam that Hollywood’s not for him in the long term."

The divorce proceedings appeared to be going somewhat amicably. In a surprise move, Hemsworth decided not to fight Cyrus for any kind of rights involving their many pets, per Us Weekly. 

Cyrus found another rebound, but this one appeared to be more serious. She was hooking up (and all over social media) with a fellow singer, Australian Cody Simpson. Wonder if Cyrus has a type? Maybe not so much a type as much as liking a sexy Aussie accent. The singers posed for a social media post, which included Cyrus putting her hands down Simpson’s pants.

According to RadarOnline.com Online, Cyrus and Simpson were reportedly on a break after their whirlwind hookup. “They are taking a break, but want to remain friends,” the insider said to the publication. “She said she just needs to focus on herself.”

As the divorce stands currently, Hemsworth has until January 21, 2020 (as reported by In Touch Weekly) to submit his side of the paperwork.
