Police have reportedly arrested a New Jersey woman after 44 dogs were allegedly found dead in her home.

Col. Patrick Callahan of the New Jersey State Police said in a statement, "The deplorable and inhumane living conditions the rescued dogs were forced to endure is tragic."

According to Fox29, Donna Roberts, 65, of Shamong Township, has been charged with animal cruelty.

130 dogs were rescued after cops discovered the shocking scene on her property.

On Tuesday, November 13, authorities responded to Roberts' home to help the Burlington County Health Department with an inspection—and were reportedly horrified by what they found.

Roberts' house was allegedly full of the smell of animal feces and ammonia, making several first responders sick when they went inside, officials said.

While 130 living dogs were on Roberts' property, 44 others were reportedly found dead, packaged in plastic bags and stored in freezers throughout the home.

Animal Cruelty

Police discovered four of the living dogs were in critical condition and they were sent to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment.

Animal shelter workers treated the other dogs.

Roberts was charged and released with a pending court date.

Callahan noted in his statement, "Troopers take an oath to protect and safeguard life, including the lives and well-being of pets, which can be vulnerable to abuse."
