The X Factor host Steve Jones appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday and explained that keeping Simon Cowell on track and knowing when to shut Paula Abdul up is the hardest part of his job — and has the video.

“The producers screaming in my stop Simon…” Steve said when Ellen DeGeneres asked what they’re saying to him in the earpiece.

“I’m wearing an earpiece and there’s about five people screaming, shut Paula up. Shut her up now. Move on. I’m going to have hearing damage in this ear by the end of series.”

But Steve says that at times when he cuts off the judges and contestants, it’s not his choice.

“I feel terrible because I feel on occasions I’m coming across as rude and abrupt and that’s really not me. I cherish every word that comes out of Paula, for instances mouth,” Steve said.

“You know, it’s a two hour long show we’re in limited time. We need a conclusion otherwise it will just kind of end and nothing will of happened.”

Ellen agreed, saying, “I think you’re doing it right. You’re saying, we need an answer. You just keep saying, we need an answer. And she Paula knows that. She’s done the show before.”

“She just talks and talks and talks. Doesn’t she?” Steve joked. “Where is the off button on this woman? Off, next please. You know? (Laughing)”
