Maria Shriver has been thinking about this divorce for a long time.  She’s been really unhappy,” a source close to California’s former First Lady tells RadarOnline.com exclusively.

“She is from a political family so she never would have done anything while Arnold was in office,” the insider adds. “She knows what the right thing to do is and she did that while he was governor, but she was struggling with the issues in their marriage.”

Schwarzenegger and Shriver’s lives have moved in very different directions in the last several years, the source adds. “She’s been thinking about separating for a while. She just needed to wait for the right time.”

On Monday, Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger announced they were separating after 25 years of marriage.  The couple has four children.

Arnold has already jumped back into the movie business, and some reports suggested that is the reason for the split. Wrong, says our source.
