Last season on Teen Mom 2, Kailyn Lowry went through a hard time with husband Javi Marroquin. And off-screen, the issues still linger. During an exclusive video interview with RadarOnline.com, Lowry revealed that she and Marroquin are still trying to figure out how to make their relationship work.
“I think it’s been hard because I’m a college student and it’s hard for me to balance a family life and a social life knowing that I can’t relate to a lot of the kids that I go to school with,” Lowry, 23, said. “I can, but I can’t at the same time.”
“It’s like this weird dynamic and I think just finding a balance where I can have my family and my social life—that’s where we have to figure it out,” she says.
But compared to last season, Lowry said she and Marroquin have gotten to a better place.
Two years after tying the knot, “Javi and I don’t fight like we used to,” she said. “And I think we kind of understand each other a lot better right now… We don’t have a whole lot of drama right now and we are just trying to make things work and figure things out.”
“I think it was Javi recognizing his place in what all of our problems and me recognizing my own, just kind of taking responsibility for our own actions and stuff like that,” Lowry explained. “Just also having an understanding that we respect each other’s personal space too kind of helped us.”
But the couple did seek professional help as well.
“We did go to therapy for a little while so I think it’s a combination of things,” she admitted.
So now that they are figuring it out, Lowry was able to share two pieces of advice to her friends, Teen Mom couple Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra.
“I would say that you should always chose your spouse over everything else,” she said. “I know I’ve had a really hard time doing that just because I am so young and I think I have a hard time balancing that.”
“Number two, to also make time for yourself, which is what I struggle with the most,” she added. “But I think they’re for sure in it for the long haul.”
In the midst of working on her marriage, Lowry also had time to write a children’s book called Love is Bubblegum with her oldest son Isaac, 5, who she conceived with ex Jo Rivera.
“Isaac more than anything helped because he is able to ask questions and tell me how he feels and stuff like that,” Lowry said. “So once he asked me what love was, I started asking him questions about it.”
Love is Bubblegum is will be on sale Nov. 17.
