Kate Middleton made it clear to Queen Elizabeth II her family would always come before royal obligations, establishing a firm condition for marrying Prince William and becoming a senior member of the monarchy, RadarOnline.com can reveal.

Middleton, 44 – now known as Princess Catherine – is said to have outlined her expectations to Elizabeth, who died aged 96 in 2022, and the then-Prince Charles, now King Charles, 77, before her wedding to William, 44, on April 29, 2011.

Middleton established strict rules before marrying Prince William.

According to royal biographer Robert Jobson, 62, the future Princess of Wales was determined to preserve her independence and protect her family life from the demands of royal tradition.

In his book Catherine, The Princess of Wales: The Biography, Jobson wrote: "(Kate) established some fundamental life rules that she would stick to when she joined The Firm."

He added: "She was clear from the outset that she would not be pigeonholed into carrying out particular duties. Her priority, she emphasized, would always be her family."

The apparent arrangement – which one source told us was "based on a lot of emotion from Kate's side – is said to have reflected Middleton's determination to avoid allowing the monarchy's expectations to overshadow her private life, particularly after becoming a mother to Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight.

"The royal couple will, of course, carry out their fair share of royal duties, but they both believe that being good parents is their most important role," Jobson noted.

Carole and Michael Middleton provided a stable childhood environment.

The biographer suggested Middleton's upbringing played a significant role in shaping those priorities.

Her parents, Carole, 71, and Michael, 77, provided a stable family environment that she reportedly wanted to replicate for her own children.

Jobson wrote her parents were "always there for her," adding Middleton hoped to provide her children with "that same level of security."

The princess' willingness to establish boundaries also appears to have impressed Elizabeth, who is said to have recognized her potential to succeed within the royal family long before her marriage to William.

The princess championed early childhood development initiatives.

Middleton has emerged as one of the monarchy's most influential and popular figures, successfully navigating the pressures of royal life while establishing a public identity that combines tradition with a more modern approach to family and duty.

Since marrying Prince William in 2011, the Princess of Wales has gradually developed a prominent role within the institution, earning praise for her measured public appearances, charitable commitments and ability to connect with people across generations.

Much of Middleton's success has been attributed to her careful approach to royal responsibilities, avoiding unnecessary controversy while championing causes that reflect her personal interests.

Her work on early childhood development, particularly through the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, has become a defining feature of her public life.

She has also supported mental health initiatives, children's charities, and projects promoting emotional well-being.

Queen Elizabeth reportedly recognized Middleton's potential before her wedding.

Her relationship with the late Queen Elizabeth II was widely regarded as an important influence, with royal commentators suggesting Middleton adopted the monarch's emphasis on discretion, consistency and public service.

Her relatively conventional upbringing outside aristocratic circles has also helped shape her reputation as an approachable figure within an institution often criticized for appearing detached from ordinary life.

Middleton's public standing acquired another dimension following her cancer diagnosis in 2024, when her decision to speak openly about her treatment attracted widespread sympathy and support.

Her gradual return to royal engagements subsequently reinforced her image as a resilient and committed future queen.

Alongside William, Middleton is increasingly viewed as central to the monarchy's long-term future, particularly as the royal family seeks to maintain public relevance while preserving its ancient traditions.
