Richard Gere is going to be a dad again at 69 — but he’s terrified he won’t live to see his new baby grow up!

The star and his much-younger wife, 35-year-old Spanish publicist Alejandra Silva, announced they were expecting on Sept. 16, but RadarOnline.com insiders revealed exclusively his joy was muted by the reality he will likely never see the baby’s 20th birthday!

“He knows he’s EXTREMELY old to be a father,” our source whispered. “He can do the math — and it’s made him very aware his time is limited.”

Richard was forced to wait until this year to marry the budding Spanish beauty after his bitter and prolonged divorce from Carey Lowell — the 57-year-old mother to their teen son, Homer — was finalized in 2016.

“Richard wanted to be sure that he had found the right woman before he had another child,” the source spilled. However, “when he found out they were pregnant, he realized how difficult it would be for him to raise a young child.”

He was deeply bothered knowing he’d be a papa past his prime, according to insiders, who said he even reached out to his close friend the Dalai Lama for support.

“The Dalai Lama reminded him that, as a Buddhist, he believes in reincarnation,” the source revealed. “He’s found some comfort in the fact that should he die before the child becomes an adult, he will return in some form to experience him or her!
