The Brazilian student killed in a freak Cape Cod shark attack has been named as Arthur Medici.

Friends and family have been left devastated by his death that came after he moved to the area for college.

Medici, of Revere, was boogie boarding with his girlfriend's brother at Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet around 12pm when he was attacked by a shark.

Witnesses say he tried to kick the shark then was attacked – he was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Medici was born in Brazil and came to the US two years ago to attend college. He was described by friends as being a 'sweet and humble' person.

It was the first fatal shark attack to take place in Massachusetts since 1936 and the beach has been closed as a result.

The beach had a sign warning about Great White sharks that feed in the inshore waters.
