Although it was an intimate ceremony filled with only close family and friends, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were missing one important guest at their nuptials: the mother-of-the-bride.
Marcheline Bertrand died in 2007 after a long battle with ovarian cancer, but even though she couldn’t physically be at her daughter’s wedding, she was there in spirit.
"Brad had a dedication to Marcheline engraved inside the chapel where we stood," Jolie told PEOPLE. The newlyweds also said their “I Dos” atop a stone etched with a tribute to Jolie’s late mother.
The humanitarian, 39, and her brother, James Haven, also wore some of her mother’s jewelry during the ceremony.
"I also wore a little flower ring that was hers, and Jamie wore an angel pin from her jewelry box," Jolie said.
Bertrand was only 56-years-old when she passed away, and Jolie said that after her mother had died, she had lost her “best friend.”
