While many have speculated on the cause of the rift - big egos, perceived slights, professional jealousy - the two show biz vets chalked up the quarter-century of alleged tension up to miscommunication.
"Whoopi came up to me and she said, 'Can I just ask you something?'" Winfrey said. "Really. She said, 'Can I just ask you something? Did I do something to you?'
Winfrey continued, "And I said -- I said, 'What are you talking about?' She says, 'All these years, you know, we've been disconnected and I just want to know, did I do something?' I said, ‘All these years I thought you were mad at me.'
"All these years I thought -- I thought that you thought -- I don't know what I thought," Winfrey said, to which Goldberg replied, "It's crazy. It's crazy."
Winfrey said, "It's crazy. So I thought, you think I'm mad at you? I thought you were mad at me.”
Goldberg replied, “So crazy.
"What was that?" Winfrey said, to which Goldberg replied, "Who knows?"
The emotional exchange airs on Oprah Monday.
