Gervais, a favorite at award shows, said he wasn't going to work dirty because the alcohol wasn't as free-flowing backstage as opposed to other shows. He then wondered aloud which of the Hollywood bad boys Emmy organizers could be most afraid of getting drunk and disorderly at the show.

"There's no one scary here, really," he said. "Nobody's going to go mental. There are no tough guys. No Russell Crowe, he wouldn't be seen dead here, its TV. Kiefer Sutherland's got a couple of miles to go before he gets messy, as well.

"Mel Gibson?!? No. I'm not gonna have a go at him. He's been through a lot. Not as much as the Jews, to be fair," he said to a rousing ovation.

Gervais then added a few props to his joke, as waiters emerged from both ends of the stage to serve the front row with beers.
