TODAY Panic: Savannah Guthrie Already Under Pressure As Ratings Fall Again

By Radar Staff

The game’s just started for TODAY anchor Savannah Guthrie, but the scoreboard’s already not in her favor.

Guthrie — who took over for Ann Curry after TODAY lost a 16-year lead over Good Morning America earlier this year — seems to already be running into the same problems as her predecessor.

ABC’s morning show beat its rival for the fourth straight week, according to The Hollywood Reporter, while matching NBC’s morning juggernaut in the coveted demographic of adults 25-54. Nielsen’s most recent five-day report report gave GMA 4.598 million viewers to TODAY‘s 4.245 million viewers.

With the Olympics on the horizon — expected to help boost the Peacock network’s sagging numbers — ABC News president Ben Sherwood boasted, “After 879 consecutive weeks, this team stands on the podium in an actual gold medal tie with” TODAY.

When she took over, the 40-year-old Guthrie admitted her promotion “was a little unexpected,” as is the stress she’s under with the failure to boost ratings following the switch.
