Andrew Cunanan gunned down fashion designer Gianni Versace outside his Miami home, but the serial killer’s true obsession was actor Tom Cruise!
Cunanan, who went on a cross-country murder spree in 1997 that culminated with the death of Versace at age 50 and the 27-year-old killer’s suicide eight days later, was “consumed” with his infatuation of Cruise, Cunanan’s former friend Michael O’Brien told RadarOnline.com.
“He lusted after him sexually.”
In fact, continued O’Brien, it seemed no guy could ever measure up to Cruise in Cunanan’s eyes.
“He had a Cruise gauge or meter when it came to rating other guys. If somebody said to him a guy on the street was cute, Andrew would say, ‘Oh, he’s OK, but he’s no Tom Cruise. No guy is as cute as my Tom.”
Cunanan was so taken with the star that he tried to be become his carbon copy.

“Andrew wanted to be Tom Cruise and often emulated him,” O’Brien told RadarOnline.com.
“He’d go to Hollywood and hit the best places and drive around in a rented BMW in the hopes of running into his hero.”
Cunanan was just as excited to get into the actor’s closet and steal his swagger.
“Andrew had a vast collection of leather jackets, but his favorite was the bomber jacket that looked exactly like the one Cruise wore in Top Gun,” O’Brien revealed. “Andrew would look in the mirror and pretend to be the characters Tom played in the movies.”
“He really believed that one day he and Tom might actually be together. That’s how crazy he was about the whole thing.”
