One of the biggest stories of 2018 was the fall from grace of legendary comedian Bill Cosby. Formerly known as America’s Dad, Cosby’s disturbing history of drugging and sexually assaulting women finally caught up with the comic.  After more than 60 women came forward with allegations spanning decades, Cosby faced criminal charges in Pennsylvania where he went on trial drugging and sexually assaulting a former Temple University employee Andrea Constand in his home outside Philadelphia in 2004. Constand was the first woman to bring criminal charges against Cosby and in September 2018 he was sentenced to three to ten years in state prison.

Daniel Hernandez, the Sound Cloud rapper known as “6ix9ine” rose to fame in 2018 with the release of his Billboard chart topping debut album, Dummy Boy. However, as his popularity increased, his legal troubles also increased. Already on probation for a 2015 case in which he pled guilty to using a child in a sexual performance, Hernandez and several of his crew were arrested in November 2018. This arrest was stemming from an alleged shooting incident on the set of his music video costarring Kanye West and Nicki Minaj in Beverly Hills. The face tattoo flaunting musician faced firearms charges including alleged conspiracy to murder, armed robbery and federal RICO charges. Facing life in prison, Hernandez was denied bail several times in jail, when judges cited him as a danger to society, as he is allegedly a member of the violent street gang, the Bloods. While in the general population at detention center in Brooklyn, Hernandez had to be moved to another jail after getting in fights with members of the rival Crips gang.

Infamous concert promoter and organizer of the doomed Fyre Festival, Billy McFarland made headlines around the world in 2018 not so much for what he did, but what he didn’t do. McFarland, along with partner, hip hop artist Ja Rule, promised music fans an amazing, exclusive concert in the sun-drenched Bahamas. Along with getting to see top musical acts like Blink 182 perform, fans were promised luxury accommodations, gourmet meals and amazing Instagram pics to make friends back home jealous. Instead of a posh, expensive concert getaway, the festival looked more like a refuge shelter, with the attendees who had spent thousands of dollars to attend, sleeping in sparse tents and eating cheese sandwiches. McFarland’s failure to give fans a good party, was more than just bad customer service when investigators discovered that he had tricked investors out of millions of dollars. In March 2018 McFarland plead guilty to wire fraud. On top of facing multiple lawsuits from angry investors and fans, he was later sentenced to six years in prison and order to forfeit $26 million. That kind of money could buy a lot of cheese sandwiches.
