Michael Douglas, 82, detailed reactions from his loved ones after his cancer diagnosis, RadarOnline.com has learned.
In his memoir, One Helluva Ride, Douglas recalled receiving a diagnosis of stage IV oral squamous cell carcinoma, which struck him with fear and anger. Perhaps the toughest part of the diagnosis, he claimed, was informing those around him, including a friend who attempted to inject some humor into the mix.
Michael Douglas Details Friend's Reaction to Cancer Diagnosis

Douglas' friend sent him a series of sarcastic, harsh emails following his cancer diagnosis.
Douglas recalled writer Shane Salerno's reaction, who didn't exactly "offer condolences." Instead, Salerno made a morbid prediction over email – "You're probably not going to beat this. After all, you're just Kirk Douglas's son.”
Salerno didn't let up on his heckling, either. The next day, Douglas recalled, he sent another email writing, "Honestly, I don't see how you can beat this, Michael. After all, you're just a TV actor.”
In a third email, he penned, “You're not a serious actor. You will never win an Oscar, and you will never beat cancer."
The morbid comments turned out to be what Douglas needed.
"Keep 'em coming, motherf---er!!!!" he wrote back to Salerno.
Michael Douglas Saw Cancer as a 'Death Sentence'

Douglas opted to undergo radiation and chemotherapy.
Douglas was aware early on the cancer diagnosis could be a literal "death sentence." The specific type of cancer was typically common and treatable, but the severity and stage IV designation were a lot more complicated.
He explained in his memoir, "In the United States, one person dies of oral cancer every hour. The reason the death toll is so high is not because it is more deadly than other forms of cancer, but because by the time symptoms appear, it’s often too far advanced for treatment."
As for his own treatment, the actor was given the option of intense radiation and chemotherapy or surgery to remove a portion of his tongue. Of course, the latter would leave him permanently disfigured and likely affect his ability to act. He opted for the former.
Michael Douglas Avoided Telling Jailed Son

Douglas chose to keep the information from son Cameron while he was in prison.
Another difficult conversation for Douglas was with his son, Cameron, who was in prison at the time. While Douglas attempted to keep the information about his cancer low-key, his high-profile status didn't allow for that sort of privacy.
Douglas avoided telling his son because he was "in his darkest place behind bars." The Hollywood star acknowledged the battle his son was going through with drug abuse problems as he served out his sentence.
"He had enough problems of his own in prison, being alone in a dangerous place, trying to stay off the drugs that were all around him. I didn’t know everything, but I knew that he had enough to worry about. I wanted him to be singularly focused on staying alive, staying clean, and getting out," he writes.
Cameron Douglas Found Out From Inmates

Cameron Douglas claimed he learned of his dad's diagnosis via inmates behind bars.
However, when Douglas went on The David Letterman Show and told the world about his cancer, Cameron inevitably found out through word of mouth from inmates. He then called his father for more context.
Douglas wrote, "I told Cameron I was sorry I hadn't been the first one to tell him, but I had stage IV cancer. He was devastated and, locked away in prison, he felt completely powerless. We both wished he could be there to comfort me."
