Demi Moore is opening up more than ever about her troubled childhood, painful past, and miraculous recovery from abuse and addiction.
In a Good Morning America interview aired this Monday, September 23, the Striptease star, 56, recalls the moment she was backstabbed by her own mother, who let her be raped by a man in exchange for cash.
The actress was an anxious teenager when her non-biological father left her mom, causing her to fall into a downward spiral. Struggling with severe alcoholism, Moore’s mother would take her out to bars so men would notice them. One day, when she was just 15, Moore entered her home to find an older man waiting for her.
“It was rape, and a devastating betrayal,” she writes in her book “Inside Out,” adding that she realized who was behind the brutal sexual abuse when the man said to her: “How does it feel to be w***ed out by your mother for $500?”
ABC News' Diane Sawyer asks Moore if she believes her mother sold her.
“I think, in my deep heart, no. I don't think it was a straightforward transaction,” says Moore. “But she still… she still did give him the access and put me in harm's way.”
Moore dropped out of high school and left her mom’s home after years of living in a real-life nightmare.
In her memoir, she reveals she was just 12 years old when her mother first tried to commit suicide.
"I remember using my fingers, the small fingers of a child, to dig the pills my mother had tried to swallow, out of her mouth," Moore writes in the book.
In the interview, she admits there were “many, many times” her mom attempted to kill herself after that. Her childhood, she says, was over.

At age 18, after months of living on her own and attending acting classes, Moore got her first film job. And just a few years later, she became the highest paid actress in Hollywood.
Moore went to rehab as a teen, and through her years in the spotlight was committed to her sobriety. That lasted 20 years, until in her forties, she again fell down the rabbit hole and started abusing drugs and alcohol. It was at that time that she began dating Ashton Kutcher and miscarried their baby.
As RadarOnline.com reported, Moore details various dark secrets about her marriage to Kutcher, 41, in her book, among other things claiming that he cheated on her twice and pushed her to relapse.
