Mel Gibson's The Beaver had a painful opening at the box office this weekend.

With Jodie Foster directing and co-starring, the drama about a man suffering from depression barely produced a blip at the box office.

Despite generally favorable reviews, the obvious lack of interest on the part of movie-goers resulted in The Beaver being booked into only 22 theaters where it took in a total of just over $104,000.

During what turned out to be the final week of filming of The Beaver, exclusively published audio tapes of Gibson exploding over the phone at his then-girlfriend and mother of his baby, Oksana Grigorieva.

None of that changed Foster's opinion about her friend of 15 years. She calls him an "incredible man, a brilliant talent."
