After blaming the Hannah Montana show for destroying his family in a recent GQ interview, troubled dad Billy Ray Cyrus says he's still trying to be friends with daughter Miley, but Good Morning America host Robin Roberts told him: "She needs a daddy!"

"I still want to be Miley's friend. I want to be that person that she comes to talk to for good, bad, indifferent," Cyrus said when he appeared  in a pre-taped interview on GMA on Wednesday morning. "I just want her to trust and know that I love her more than life itself and I'll be by her side through the good and the bad."

Host Robin Roberts didn't hide her disagreement at his comment and scolded the star, "She's got plenty of friends, she needs a daddy!"

"I promise you I'll do my best to be a good dad," he replied humbly.

Cyrus was on GMA to respond to the scandal over his interview in the March issue of GQ where he said the Disney hit that catapulted Miley to fame ultimately ripped his family apart.

"I'll tell you now, that damned show destroyed my family," the country singer told GQ in the interview. "For my family to be here and everyone be safe, and sound and happy and normal, would have been fantastic. I'd erase it all in a second if I could."

A calmer Cyrus is now doing damage control over his harsh comments against the network. "I love Hannah Montana, I love Disney. I did the interview with GQ two weeks before Christmas when I was in the midst of a divorce, I was in darkness," he said on GMA.

"Right now, there's a lot of positive communication between me and my family.  I just want to put my family back together," he told Roberts.

Cyrus admitted that at times he'd tried too hard to be pals instead of a parent with his 18-year-old superstar daughter.

"I look back on it and I know that I did kind of approach being a dad as a friend and maybe I could have done some things different."

The Achy Breaky Heart singer said that he had faith in his daughter to make better decisions following the scandal when photos surfaced  of her smoking from a bong hit the headlines last December.

"My has a great heart. She's very intelligent. She will make good choices, she knows right from wrong. She's got a great heart and a

great spirit. I trust Miley."

He admitted that if were to do it all again, he'd have tried to slow down the Miley's catapult to stardom.

"I knew that my little girl was going to grow up. I didn't realize that it was going to be so huge, so quick, so enormous around the world. That she would become the next superstar. I wish we'd have enjoyed the ride just a little bit more."

Billy Ray and wife Tish filed separated last October after 17 years,  but the couple are now attempting a reconciliation, and he filed a request to withdraw his petition for divorce on March 11.
