Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt, says his wife doesn’t know her right leg is being amputated.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, doctors treating her at a Los Angeles hospital decided on the procedure after an MRI revealed an infection in her leg had spread into the bone.

“I talked with the doctors about whether or not to tell Zsa Zsa about the amputation,” a devastated Prince Frederic told RadarOnline.com, in an exclusive interview.

“We decided that the news would probably send her into shock, putting her more at risk for surgery.

“She does not know she is losing part of her leg.”

Prince Frederic said the 93-year-old screen icon, ailing since summer 2010, was going into surgery at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center around 11.15am PT.

Gabor was initially taken in to hospital last November after she complained of pain and swelling in her legs.

Doctors had hoped the infection would heal, but it has now spread to the bone.

“The decision to have the surgery was not an easy one,” he said.

“The infection is bad, it went into the bone... I didn’t want to make that decision but this is my wife’s life we’re talking about.”
