What started as a beautiful marriage proposal in Costa Rica with a stunning $500,000 engagement ring, ended in a disastrous series of events from domestic abuse charges to drug use to multiple sex partners.

And now, has the REAL story behind the disastrous marriage and now pending divorce between Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen and his estranged wife Brooke Mueller.

The couple shared a penchant for cocaine and multiple lovers. first reported that they had as many as 10 sex partners -- some male and some female, during their short 2-year-long marriage.

Their relationship started to unravel on Christmas Day 2009. And in 6 short months -- the marriage completely collapsed.

It began with a 911 phone call from Aspen, Colorado where Brooke said “My husband had me with a knife and I’m scared for my life and he threatened me.”

Brooke described the knife as a “switchblade” and said that Sheen “has it in his back pocket.” Charlie was arrested and taken into custody on Christmas Day.

Brooke tried to recant the charges and later sources told she didn’t want her husband -- and the father of her children -- to go to jail.

Those domestic violence charges are yet to be resolved in Colorado, but Charlie is hoping to come to a plea bargain agreement.

The two were known to be heavy drug users. And reported exclusively that they did cocaine and drank alcohol for months right until the moment they both checked into rehab.

Charlie went into rehab for “preventative measures,” said his publicist.

Brooke, who had been in and out of rehab five times, checked into a different rehab center in North Carolina for her crack addiction.

The drug crisis left their twin 15-month-old boys Max and Bob with absentee parents, so Brooke starting doing “rehab at home.”

When Charlie got out of rehab -- he immediately went back to his old ways. The star, who was the first identified in Hollywood Madame Heidi Fleiss’s black book in the late 90s, cheated on his wife by hiring at least one escort. He did it in his own home, when Brooke was out of town.

He was photographed meeting her wearing a fake moustache.

“He’s been cheating for a long time,” a source told at the time. “He just got caught.” And, Brooke was furious.

A rep for Sheen had the following to say about the allegations: “The woman in question is the sister of one of Sheen’s campmates and Sheen was only responding to a 12th step call. Since Sheen knew he was being followed and how this would look, he wore the moustache in a tongue and cheek disguise gesture.”

The cheating with an escort pushed her over the edge, and in March, reported exclusively that Brooke wanted a divorce.

In Mid April she moved out and took the kids with her. She now lives in a house in trendy Los Feliz.

And all along, Charlie had been renegotiating his mega contract with CBS, he even showed up at work with a “sober coach.”

In May, he signed a new deal giving him $2 million an episode.

Brooke and Charlie have been living separate lives for several weeks and on Tuesday agreed on a financial settlement should they divorce.
