Tom Hanks is flying high with his new hit film Sully about a heroic pilot — but few know he also once flew high with the help of illegal drugs!

Hanks, 60, has secretly admitted he smoked pot and snorted cocaine, but he claimed he gave them up before they ruined his life and harmed his children.

"I thought, I can't be a responsible parent and do this," Hanks said. "This has got to stop. This is not good. It put not just me but the people I loved in a degree of danger."

Sadly, though his own drug use is ancient history, Hanks has watched his own son spin out of control! He blames himself for his son Chet's drug problems, sources told RadarOnline.com.

"Tom has been beating himself up over Chet losing his bearings," confided an insider. "He's putting the fault squarely on his shoulders for not being attentive enough during his formative years. Instead, he chose to put his career first and foremost before his family."

Chet, 26, is the son of Hanks and his second wife, actress Rita Wilson, 59. Their younger son, Truman, is 20.

"Tom would sometimes be gone for months on end, which prevented him from being a hands-on dad. He feels Chet suffered the consequences," said the insider.

Hanks and his wife were devastated when Chet went off the rails during a trip to London in May. The would-be rapper, who calls himself "Chet Haze," reportedly got drunk at a nightclub and vomited outside. Later, at his hotel, he asked for cocaine and became indignant when a woman refused his advances.

He then flew into a frenzy, trashing his hotel room and causing about $2,000 in damages. Chet has also posted images of himself toting guns and threatened to attack shock jock Howard Stern.

Several rehab stints apparently haven't helped him beat booze and drugs, sources said — but Hanks remains optimistic Chet will one day grow up enough to sober up, sources said.

"Everybody's got something that comes along and chews 'em up for a bit," Hanks said.
