Lamar Odom's best friend Jamie Sangouthai was struggling financially before his tragic death, RadarOnline.com can exclusively reveal.

According to documents obtained by Radar, the NYC native, who succumbed to a suspected heroin overdose over the weekend in Los Angeles, owed more than $2,000 in taxes to the state of New York.

In papers filed on January 13, 2015, Sanguthai was slapped with a $2,352.70 state tax lien.

He hadn't paid off his debt before his death, records indicate.

The late Khloe & Lamar star, who was 37 when he died, owed the state $512.10 in 2008, but he eventually paid it off three years later.

On her E! reality spinoff, Odom's estranged wife, Khloe Kardashian, often complained about her former NBA star hubby's tendency to give his lifelong best friend money.

Odom, who has struggled with addiction issues himself, is reportedly "beside himself" in the wake of the tragedy.
