Cruise’s character Maverick faced-off against Kilmer’s Iceman in the 1986 original movie, and despite a well-publicized battle with throat cancer which has ravaged his ability to talk, Kilmer, 58, has made no secret of his desire to be included in the sequel.
RadarOnline.com can exclusively reveal that both actors were staying at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar hotel, and Kilmer was spotted both arriving and leaving, while production was taking place last week.
Cruise, 55, recently posted on Twitter confirming filming had begun on the sequel.
Kilmer has campaigned to be included in the long-awaited sequel for years, and in November 2016 was unfortunately forced to retract a statement he made saying he’d been “offered Top Gun 2” and accepted to appear in the movie.
Apologizing to fans his quipped he had "jumped the top gun" with the announcement.
Remembering the filming of the original, Kilmer said during a Reddit Ask Me Anything chat: “Tom was a sweetheart. We were all quite rowdy, me and all the real flyboys and the actors, so I actually felt a little sorry for him cause we all had time to play and date the cute extras and zoom around San Diego in muscle cars, but Tom was always in some scene and never got to play with us.”
Top Gun 2 is expected to be released in July 2019.
