In 2014 Rihanna was lambasted in the press – and reportedly by TLC – for arriving at the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards in a dress that left almost nothing to the imagination. The see-through mesh gown revealed her boobs and her bum. Thankfully the Caribbean queen preserved at least some modesty by wearing a pair of panties.

Maybe we should blame Liz Hurley for the generation of celebrities who feel they have to flash a lot of flesh to make an impact on the red carpet. In 1994, she arrived on the arm of her then-boyfriend Hugh Grant while wearing a black Gianni Versace dress with cutouts and a plunging neckline. Oversized safety pins gave the impression that Hurley’s buxom curves were barely being contained.

She appears to be naked in an episode of her sitcom One Big Happy – but Kelly Brook once arrived at an event in her native England wearing little more than a tiny shred of fabric. In 2000, she arrived at the Snatch premiere in a dress that was slashed up to her hip, revealing her matching sequined panties.

When Toni Braxton arrived at the 2001 Grammy Awards, the R&B singer looked like she left something at home – the rest of her dress! The white gown was essentially two pieces of material held together by a band that made sure her bum and lady bits were covered.

Even the Academy Awards aren’t sacred when it comes to scandalous dresses. Rita Ora arrived at the Vanity Fair party in February 2015 wearing a long black dress with a sheer side panel that proved she wasn’t wearing a bra or any panties — and had a rather striking tattoo, too.

The Versace label was responsible for another scandalous red carpet look at the 2000 Grammy Awards. J. Lo proved how low she could go by wearing a green dress with a neckline so plunging it fell way below her navel and a slit so high it’s a miracle it covered her crotch.

Cher is the queen of scandalous red carpet outfits. And she has appeared at the Academy Awards on more than one occasion wearing barely-there gowns. In 1986 she arrived at the black tie event exposing her torso and two years later, when she picked up an Oscar, she did so in a sheer black beaded gown.
