Royal girls' day! Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, also known as the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge, respectively, left their husbands behind to attend the women's singles final at Wimbledon on Saturday, July 14. Markle is a close friend of tennis finalist Serena Williams, who attended her royal wedding to Prince Harry. Although Williams lost the Wimbledon 2018 championship to Angelique Kerber, the royals had a blast. Scroll down RadarOnline.com's gallery for more!
The crowd was thrilled to see Markle, 37, and Middleton, 36, arrive at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. They were greeted by an excited line of ball boys and ball girls as well as junior tennis players.
According to Tia Carter, 11, Markle spoke to her kindly at Wimbledon. "She asked how old I was, and what I was doing today. I told her I will be performing the coin toss and she said 'so I will be seeing you later'." https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/6779506/meghan-markle-and-kate-middleton-giggle-together-after-ball-almost-hits-them-in-royal-box-as-novak-djokovic-beats-rafael-nadal-at-wimbledon/
The gals enjoyed sitting in the royal box on Centre Court. Meghan sported a casual summer look of Ralph Lauren shirt and flared cream trousers, while Prince William's wife Middleton wore a black and white patterned Jenny Packham dress, teamed with nude suede heels and drop earrings. Other celebrities were spotted on Centre Court, including golfer Tiger Woods, Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton and Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour.
At one point, Markle and Middleton giggled together after they were almost struck by a ball in their VIP Wimbledon box!
While watching the earlier match between men's semifinal rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, the duchesses had to duck to dodge a ball accidentally hit into the crowd by Nadal. Sources have said there is rivalry brewing between Markle and Middleton, but they were all smiles on Saturday at one of England's most prestigious events.
The Duchesses watched Djokovic beat Nadal -- but what they really wanted to do was root for Williams, 36 in the later match. The tennis star just had her baby daughter by husband Alexis Ohanian, 35, last fall. The new mom was determined to compete at famed Wimbledon but she lost to German Kerber, in two sets. "Serena was off balance today," an ESPN tennis commentator noticed. "She didn't play her best."
Williams is known to be one of Markle's closest friends and she made the scene at the royal wedding and reception when the actress married Harry on May 19. "We always have supported each other, just been there for each other through a lot," Williams told reporters this week about her relationship with the actress-turned-royal-wife.
Markle and Middleton cheered on Williams during her tough Saturday match, but Kerber from Germany prevailed. Teary-eyed Williams, who had a difficult birth in September, told the crowd, "To all the mums out there, I tried." She added, as the duchesses looked on, "I'm obviously disappointed but I have so much to look forward to."
