Kanye West sure has packed a lot of “Krazy” into his life so far. And as the global star celebrates turning 42, he doesn’t seem to be slowing down.
As RadarOnline.com readers know, Kanye has made a business of getting involved in everyone else’s business. From onstage interruptions to social media call-outs, Yeezy has placed himself in the middle of several scandals and controversies.
And fatherhood doesn’t seem to be grounding him, or his opinions. Kanye, who recently celebrated five years of wedded bliss with Kim Kardashian, is also a new father for the fourth time, after welcoming baby Psalm via surrogate last month.
As Kanye celebrates his birthday, not to mention anniversary and new son, join RadarOnline.com for a look back at the rapper’s most famous and infamous rants and rebellions.
2004: No Excuses
Kanye started what would be his signature wacky move – interrupting awards shows – early in his career. At the American Music Awards of 2004, the singer stormed out of the auditorium after losing Best New Artist to country singer Gretchen Wilson. He later commented, "I felt like I was definitely robbed ... I was the best new artist this year.”
2005: Hurricane Katrina
A year later, Kanye and Mike Myers stood side by side during a Red Cross fund-raising drive for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Suddenly, and much to Mike’s shock, Kanye went off script, criticizing the government’s response to the disaster, and famously announcing that then president “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”
2006: MTV Euro Awards
Kanye was already a big winner at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards, picking up the best hip-hop artist. But when he lost best video to a French duo, he once again crashed the stage and interrupted their acceptance speech with a profanity-laced rant: “If I don’t win,” he said, “the award show loses credibility.”
2008: Bonna-boo!
In 2008, Kanye was originally scheduled to perform in the daytime, on Bonnaroo's second-tier stage. But given his "Glow in the Dark" stage production and superstar status, he insisted on performing at night on the festival's main stage. With the main stage fully booked, organizers had to squeeze in a time slot for him at 2:45 a.m. Saturday night. But even then, Kanye was late, and didn’t actually take the stage for another two hours – at 4:45 in the morning. Those few fans that stayed witnessed what many described as a “below-average” performance.
2008: Bonnaroo Excuse
A little over a week later, Kanye took to his blog to pen a 773-word explanation, and blame the concert organizers. “WE WERE OBVIOUSLY DEALING WITH F***ING IDIOTS WHO DIDN’T REALLY HAVE THE CAPACITY TO REALLY PUT ON THIS SHOW PROPERLY,” Kanye blasted in all-caps. “THEY TRIED 2 GIVE ME A TIME SLOT WHERE IT WAS STILL LIGHT OUTSIDE … I HAVE A F***ING LIGHT SHOW DUMB A**, IT’S NOT CALLED GLOW IN THE DARK FOR NO REASON SQUID BRAINS!”
2009: Taylor Swift
Yeezy’s most famous flare up came at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, when Taylor Swift, just 19-years-old at the time, defeated Beyoncé to win Best Female Video. As she accepted the award, Kanye notoriously jumped on stage and interrupted her, mid-acceptance speech. "Yo Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'ma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!" he declared to millions watching.
2009: Swift Apology
Two days later, Kanye admitted he was rude, and apologized. But the damage was done, and fans turned on him. Even President Obama called the rapper a "jackass" over his comments.
2013: LAX Incident
While leaving an airport terminal in July 2013, paparazzi photographer Daniel Ramos started peppering Kanye with questions. Eyewitnesses said the singer suddenly exploded, “shoved the photog to the ground and yelled at him after trying to take a few snaps.” The rapper was subsequently charged with criminal battery and attempted grand theft in connection with the incident, and eventually sentenced to two years probation.
2016: Liposuction
DAILY. BREAKING. CELEBRITY NEWS. ALL FREE.
Kanye confessed he started abusing painkillers in 2016, after undergoing liposuction treatment – the same procedure that led to his mother Donda’s sudden death in 2007. According to private legal documents exclusively obtained by RadarOnline.com, Kanye underwent liposuction with a top Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon on November 7, 2016.
2016: Painkillers
He also admitted to using liquid marijuana, a Ecstasy-related party drug 2cb, anxiety pill Valium, and powerful painkillers Percocet and Demerol in the days following his cosmetic surgery.
2016: Kanye Krumbles
Just two weeks later, Kanye was rushed to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and placed on a psychiatric hold. The rap star stayed hospitalized over that Thanksgiving weekend because of a temporary psychosis stemming from sleep deprivation and extreme dehydration. A RadarOnline.com insider said at the time that Kim’s robbery in Paris "pushed him over the edge. He hasn’t been sleeping because Kim has been awake all night with nightmares."
2018: BiPolar
In August 2018, Kanye revealed that he was bipolar, admitting he had his “first complete blackout” when he was only a little kid. “I think it’s good that when I had my first complete blackout at age 5, my mom didn’t fully medicate me. Because I might have never been ‘Ye.”
2018: The 13th Amendment
A few weeks later, Kanye launched a series of bizarre social media rants after a controversial appearance on Saturday Night Live. Among his declarations, Ye called for the 13th Amendment, which outlawed slavery in 1865, to be abolished.
2018: Slavery Correction
“The 13th Amendment is slavery in disguise meaning it never ended. We are the solution that heals (sic),” he shared. Minutes later he clarified the statement by tweeting: “Not abolish but let’s amend the 13th amendment We apply everyone’s opinions to our platform (sic).”
2019: House of Kanye
As of May, 2019, Yeezy has been leading his own church, drawing the family into a more religious time as they expand their brood. Kanye and wife Kim welcomed baby son Psalm West on May 9, joining older sisters North and Chicago and brother Saint.
2019: True Love
And now, after welcoming son Psalm into their family, all seems well for the famous couple. Kim and Kanye celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary on May 24, and sources told RadarOnline.com exclusively they're still “crazy for each other!”
2019: And Beyond
“There was so many times when it was about to just come crashing down, but Kim ultimately pulls the family together because she does love him. She wants to grow old with Kanye,” a source close to Kim said.
