The Turpins were arrested for and charged with 12 counts of torture, seven counts of abuse of a dependent adult, six counts of child abuse or neglect and 12 counts of false imprisonment. David also faces one count of committing a lewd act. Police found their 13 children, who range in ages 2 to 29, malnourished and shackled to furniture after one of the 17-year-old siblings escaped from the home. District Attorney Michael Hestrin said in a press conference that the children were held captive in the filthy home and were taunted with food while they starved. They were allowed to shower only once a year. He also claimed they were beaten and strangled.
Charles Manson died in December 2017, but his sick crimes continue to haunt. Manson’s followers murdered Sharon Tate, who was eight-and-a-half months pregnant at the time, by brutally stabbing her 16 times in August 1969 in her Los Angeles home. Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski and Steven Parent were also murdered in the house. The next night, the followers killed Rosmary and Leno LaBianca. They were tied up with pillowcases over their heads before they were stabbed to death.
Ariel Castro held Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus captive for a decade. On TODAY, Knight explained how Castro would barricade them in an upstairs room in his Cleveland home. She recalled, “There were days like he’ll come in and he’ll just do bad things in front of me.” Castro was indicted on 512 counts of kidnapping, 446 counts of rape, seven counts of gross sexual imposition, six counts of assault, three counts of child endangerment and two counts of aggravated murder. He was sentenced to life in prison and committed suicide while behind bars.
With O.J. Simpson being found innocent in the double murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, the killer of the gruesome crimes was never brought to justice. Brown Simpson was found murdered outside of her condo in June 1994 with wounds to her head and neck. Her head was nearly severed from her body. She also had defensive counts on her hands. The walkway of her home was covered in her blood.
JonBenet Ramsey was found murdered in the basement in her Boulder, Colorado home on December 26, 1996. Her father John found the 6-year-old bound and gagged. Her skull had been fractured and she had been strangled with a garrote made out of a cord and a paintbrush, suggesting she could've been sexually assaulted. Although her parents John and Patsy were suspected of the twisted murder, her killer remains unknown.
Jodi Arias was found guilty of murdering her lover Travis Alexander. While in the shower, he was stabbed 27 times. He was also found with a gunshot wound to the face and his throat slit from ear to ear. She was given a life sentence.
Jaycee Dugard was kidnapped and held captive for 18 years when she was abducted at age 11 in 1991. She was imprisoned in a makeshift recording studio in the backyard of her abductors Phillip and Nancy Garrido's home. Dugard was raped repeatedly and gave birth to two daughters fathered by Garrido before she was rescued in 2009. Phillip was sentenced to 431 years in prison, while Nancy received 36 years to life in prison.
Colleen Stan hitchhiked to a friend’s party in 1977. Thirty minutes after getting into a car with young couple Cameron and Janice Hooker, Cameron held a knife to her throat and placed a homemade wooden box over her head. She was locked in a box under their waterbed for 23 hours a day. In the one hour she was released a day, she was beaten, raped and tortured.
