Makeup can literally change the way a person looks, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. With techniques like contouring and high coverage concealers anyone can look 10 years younger and even thinner! Celebrities have the best makeup artists getting them ready for their red carpet events, and wether it's a classic look or a dramatic smokey eye they usually look amazing.
Makeup trends change over the years and things like thin eyebrows have been replaced with a full contoured face. Some of the hottest makeup trends need a skilled artist to perfect or else someone can end up looking like they have a dirty face or belong in a scary movie. And regardless of their access to the makeup pros, celebrities are not immune from some pretty shocking makeup disasters.
From unblended contouring attempts, overly smokey eyes, and bad lipstick choices, take a look at 23 of the worst celebrity makeup malfunctions ever!!!!
1. Tyra Banks
One would think that Tyra Banks would know when makeup looks good but even supermodels make mistakes! Banks arrived to the 2012 Moth Ball with an attempted smokey eye that went too far. Her over shadowed lids made her look like she didn't have eyebrows. That combined with the pink lips resulted in a very confusing and scary look.
2. Billy Joel
There's nothing wrong with guys wearing eyeliner, but Billy Joel took it too far when using red eyeliner on his bottom lid. The fleshy color made his eyes look infected, and though the tear drop streak was a nice touch the whole look was just too melodramatic. And a little gross.
3. Kelly Osbourne
Kelly Osbourne has certainly had quite a number of looks throughout the years. But it's doubtful she ever intended to be yellow. When she arrived to a 2012 Audi event, her foundation was the wrong color for her, giving her an unnatural, jaundiced look. Combined with the pink lips, poor Osbourne looked like she might have had food poisoning.
4. Bradley Copper
Ladies aren't the only ones who wear makeup on the red carpet! Bradley Cooper arrived to the Valentine's Day premiere with a face full of foundation and bronzer. Unfortunately not his whole face. Whoever did his makeup forgot to apply it to his entire neck and face and blend.
5. Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj has rocked a lot of eye catching and weird looks on the red carpet. But at the American Music Awards nominations in 2011 all she rocked was a whole lot of bad makeup. The attempt to highlight and contour her face failed thanks to the harsh lines around her nose and face that had not been blended.
6. January Jones
Did January Jones have the same makeup artist as Joel for the The Costume Institute Gala? Because her bold eye makeup was a little...too bold. Jones' harshly over-lined eyes completely washed her out, making her look more ghoulish than glamorous.
7. Claudia Winkleman
Somebody should have handed Claudia Winkleman a tissue before she attended the GQ Men of the Year awards in London in 2013. Her horribly smudged eyeliner had everyone talking and she even tweeted that she was throwing away her eyeliner! The pale lipstick added insult to injury.
8. Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera attended the MAC AIDS Fund VIVA Glam V after party in New York in 2004 with some heavy pink bronzer and shadow. In her defense, this was in 2004 when at least her thin eyebrows were trendy but the extreme use of blush and forehead shadow should have never made its way on to the red carpet. Thankfully Aguilera isn't rocking the pink face look anymore and is one hot mama!
9. Snooki and J-Woww
Two for one! Snooki and J-Woww showed up overly bronzed and tanned to the California Gurls' post Movie Awards Party in 2010. Snooki's too-tan skin and dark shadow gave off some oompa loompa vibes. Thankfully Snooki stopped over tanning and now looks great.
10. Ke$ha
Ke$ha unveiled her new Baby G watch line design at SLS Hotel in 2012 in Beverly Hills and also unveiled some bizarre forehead makeup. The gold and glitter combined with the harsh black line across her face kind of made her look like a super hero. In a bad way.
11. Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan attended the Dw by Kanye West show during Paris Fashion Week in 2002 with some heavy bronzer and foundation. She may have been on to something with her early attempts at contouring but failed to blend the color tones on her face. The white powder, bare lips and dark eyes made her look a little sickly.
12. Taylor Momsen
Taylor Momsen went full raccoon at the "Material Girl" launch party in 2010. Momsen's goth aesthetic missed the dark and mysterious mark, landing her in Halloween Town instead.
13. Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez arrived at the American Idol XIV party in 2015 and almost looked amazing. Her dress was beautiful but she took the "match your makeup to your outfit" rule too far. Her blue liner matched her collar perfectly, but her entire face seemed to disappear and it kind of looked like she had something wrong with her eyes.
14. Shannon Bex and Aubrey O’Day
Shannon Bex and Aubrey O'Day arrived to the 2015 MTV movie awards with major glow. The heavy contouring around their forehead and nose needed to be blended more and there was way too much highlighter on their face.
15. Paz de la Huerta
Actress Paz de la Huerta showed up to the HBO's post Emmy party in 2011 almost unrecognizable. The contour around her nose and face was harsh and unblended, and her purple lipstick (and the unfortunate expression captured in this photo) made Huerta look like she was going to hurl.
16. Jodie Marsh
Jodie Marsh posed for a photoshoot in 2011 with a failed attempt at a smokey eye. Her dark penciled brows and heavy black eyeshadow left her looking more than a little scary.
17. Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron was almost unrecognizable when she starred as the lead in Monster, and she was not herself again when she accepted her Oscar for the same role. The usually flawless Theron may have been going for a golden glow befitting her golden statuette, but her tan was overwhelmingly orange and her face looked yellow and eyebrowless.
18. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga is known to show up to the red carpet experimental looks, but when her attempt to tone it down at the MTV Music Awards in 2009 was a fail. Not only was her face covered in white powder but the dark, heavy eyeshadow was messy and overbearing. She has definitely toned down her bold looks and has changed in appearance over the years.
19. Leighton Meester
Leighton Meester is gorgeous but wore way too much makeup for an American Eagle Outfitters opening in 2009. Purple is a hard color for anybody to rock and with the red lipstick and too-pale powder she looked like a little girl who got into her moms makeup.
20. Kerli
Estonian singer Kerli came to the 2013 Grammys with a very interesting look. Her pink eyebrows, winged eyeliner and forehead makeup looked like she belonged in a movie about magic and was a strange choice for the red carpet.
21. Tamar Braxton
Tamar Braxton may have wanted to look pretty pink at a pre Grammy party in 2012 but it was way too heavy. The white powder and too much blush made her look a little bit like a clown.
22. Sharon Stone
Sharon Stone made a bold move when she showed up to the Basic Instincts 2 premiere in 2006 with gold lipstick. Unfortunately it completely blended in with her face and, combined with her bland eyeshadow, it washed her right out.
23. Kelly Osbourne
Unfortunately for Osbourne we had to include her in the list again. Perhaps the most infamous of all celebrity makeup fails is this: when she arrived to the first annual Red Party in 2003. Her dark black eyeshadow but ultra bright pink lipstick was scary, confusing and downright unflattering. It may have taken some time, but since then Osbourne definitely has her look down and now looks amazing!
