Emma Heming Willis recalled her first meeting with the actor.

The couple met at a Los Angeles gym in 2005, began dating years later, and made their first public appearance together in 2008 before marrying in 2009.

Heming Willis said: "I met him in like 2005, I want to say, and we met at the gym, like most people in Hollywood do, I guess.

"His time was before mine, and we would sort of overlap, and the things I remember about him was just how warm and charismatic, how funny he was, but he always really took the time to want to learn more about me. Just more about who I was, about my life, and prior to that I had never really thought about Bruce Willis."

Heming Willis had grown up watching Willis in Moonlighting, although she said she was never particularly interested in the action movies that helped make him one of Hollywood's biggest stars.

She said: "I grew up watching Moonlighting, but I was never really an action movie fan. So when I had noticed him, I had said to my mother, 'I met Bruce Willis, and he's really a lovely man.'

"And my mom was like, 'What are you doing? You're engaged to be married'. I said, 'No, no, no' – yes, at the time, I was engaged to be married, but I had met him, and I just noticed that."

Emma Heming Willis became an advocate for dementia awareness.

Willis retired from acting in 2022 after his family revealed he had aphasia. They announced in 2023 that his condition had progressed and he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.

Heming Willis has since become an advocate for dementia awareness and caregivers, discussing the realities families can face following an FTD diagnosis.

She has also spoken about how Willis' spontaneous personality influenced her own approach to life.

Heming Willis said: "If opposites attract, that couldn't be more true for my husband and I. He is very spontaneous – I really like a plan.

"I am really sort of type A. I think he really enjoyed life, and it's not that I didn't, but I needed structure, so I felt like in a way, we helped each other."

Bruce Willis retired from acting in 2022 after his family revealed he had aphasia

Willis became box-office gold after his breakthrough as John McClane in 1988 action blockbuster Die Hard, turning the wisecracking New York cop into one of cinema's defining heroes.

He returned for four sequels in the action franchise while building a hugely successful movie career also spanning comedy, drama and science fiction.

His biggest films included Armageddon, The Sixth Sense, Pulp Fiction, The Fifth Element and 12 Monkeys. Before becoming a movie heavyweight, Willis found fame opposite Cybill Shepherd in the television series Moonlighting.

His distinctive combination of humor, vulnerability and action-star swagger helped make Willis an internationally recognizable Hollywood leading man for decades.
