Bernie Madoff’s late sister and brother-in-law are believed to have passed away in a suspected suicide pact. The couple was found dead in the garage of their home with fatal gunshot wounds.
According to Daily Mail, Sondra and Marvin Wiener were found discovered on Thursday in the garage of their Florida residence in what authorities initially believed was a murder-suicide. Now, friends of the late couple revealed to the outlet that Sondra, 87, and her husband, 89, died in a suspected suicide pact. Marvin was suffering from a terminal illness, and, according to pals, the couple vowed that when they passed, they would “go together.”
“This isn’t a murder, that’s unfair,” a friend close to the duo said, referencing the fact that authorities were investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide. Although the source confirmed Marvin was suffering from a terminal illness, they did not disclose exactly what the illness was.
“It was a consensual agreement between the two. He was sick and dying and they made a pact that they would both go together when the time came,” the source claimed. “Whatever went on in there happened because they both wanted it to happen.”
While Sondra was perhaps best known for being the older sister of the convicted fraudster – who pleaded guilty in 2009 to running history’s largest Ponzi scheme worth upwards of $60 billion – friends of the late couple claim that the alleged suicide pact had nothing to do with Madoff.
“Everybody knew about their past but it didn’t matter. They were a very, very nice couple, they didn’t give anyone any trouble,” the friend said. “She was an excellent swimmer; I would see her at the pool - but her husband was sick.”
“That’s the whole story. It has nothing really to do with Madoff; it’s just two people who loved one another, lived normal lives and who decided they wanted to leave this world together.”
As RadarOnline.com recently reported, Sondra and Marvin’s deaths were confirmed after a newsletter was sent to the other homeowners living in their private Valencia Lakes gated community.
"Let me start off by stating that as many of you have heard, we had a tragic situation on Barca Boulevard regarding the passing of Sondra and Marvin Weiner," the email read. "Our thoughts and condolences go out to their family. There is currently an investigation pending. All I can say is at this time there is no security or safety threat to anyone in the community."
