Dec. 20 2018, Updated 8:14 p.m. ET
Rosie O'Donnell's much-younger fiancée pursued the comedian for years before their whirlwind engagement, RadarOnline.com can exclusively report.
RadarOnline.com was the first to report the news that O'Donnell, 56, popped the question to Rooney, 33, earlier this year. Now, a source close to the couple revealed that Rooney went to great lengths to meet the former talk show host back when they were still strangers.
"Elizabeth has been obsessed with Rosie for years! Elizabeth used to travel to all of Rosie's shows," the family insider revealed.
According to the source, Rooney was not going after the funny woman for her money. Instead, she's "always" had a thing for O'Donnell.
"This is not a money thing or a celebrity thing," said the source.
In fact, the insider revealed just how the former talk show host and police officer met after communicating online – in an unexpected way.

"Rosie has a website where she posts poems and Elizabeth wrote her a poem that she ended up putting on her front page," the source revealed. "After that, Rosie gave Elizabeth her email address and the two started emailing."
From there, the two began to talk on the phone, the source said.
"Before she knew it, Elizabeth was going to New York every weekend to see Rosie!" the source added.
O'Donnell and Rooney continue to live apart despite their engagement. Insiders previously told RadarOnline.com that Rooney refuses to move in with the mother of five in New York City because she is not ready to give up her dream job as a mounted officer in Worcester, Massachusetts.
