Michelle Obama's Miscarriage Heartbreak: It Was 'Lonely, Painful & Demoralizing'

Michelle and Barack Obama suffered the devastation of a miscarriage before they welcomed their two daughters into the world. Now, RadarOnline.com can exclusively report that the experience left the former FLOTUS filled with pain.

In her memoir, Becoming, Michelle, 54, revealed that she suffered a miscarriage 20 years ago. She had to undergo IVF to conceive daughters Malia and Sasha. While Michelle has always appeared poised for the cameras, the former FLOTUS admitted she knows what it's like to feel helpless.

"A miscarriage is lonely, painful, and demoralizing almost on a cellular level," the former FLOTUS wrote.

As tragic as the pain from a miscarriage may feel, Michelle advised readers that it's best not to shift blame on oneself.

"When you have one, you will likely mistake it for a personal failure, which it is not," Barack's wife continued.

Michelle said she was left questioning what may have caused the miscarriage. She began to feel a "first flicker of resentment involving politics and Barack's unshakable commitment to the work," according to the memoir.

"Or maybe I was just feeling the acute burden of being female," she added.

While Barack's life consisted of reaching the public in his politics, Michelle was around the age of 34 when she began doing in vitro fertilization.

Michelle said the experience involved "daily ultrasounds," cervical checks and getting her blood taken all while her husband was busy at work.

In 1998, Malia, now 20, was born. Then, three years later, after a "single round of IVF," Sasha, now 17, was born.
