An elated Olivia Newton-John nearly adopted a baby — until a horrific tragedy thwarted her plans to expand her family, RadarOnline.com can exclusively report.

In her new memoir Don't Stop Believin', the singer claims she and ex-husband Matt Lattanzi "decided to adopt a child from Romania" in 1990 after suffering multiple miscarriages following her daughter Chloe's birth.

The star, now 70, says she was inspired by a "wonderful woman" she met in an antique shop who had adopted two children from the eastern European country.

The couple even packed their bags for a trip to Romania after a work obligation in Spain "to find a sister or brother for Chloe."

"My suitcase was filled with clothes and toys for the new child," she writes in the heartbreaking new read, currently available in Australian bookstores. "I think it was my gut instinct that this was something I needed to do."

However, while she was about to take the stage for a performance in Spain, John learned her goddaughter — her best friend Nancy Chuda's 5-year-old daughter Colette — had died of kidney cancer.

"My hands shook and I couldn't stop crying," she remembers. "How could we live without our Colette?"

John never traveled to Romania for the adoption, and was too overcome with grief to complete the process.

"My heart took a long time to mend," she explains.

Instead, she focused her energy on a new foundation, Healthy Child Healthy World, which helps protect children from harmful chemicals.

John remains a mother of one, and is very close to now 32-year-old daughter Chloe, who has beaten addiction and anorexia in recent years.

Chloe is now helping her mother through her most recent cancer relapse, the star says.

"She has been taking care of me with so much love and grace," John gushes in the book. "I have never been as proud of her as I am now."
