Redmond O'Neal Ditched By Famous Family In Court Hearing For New Assault Charges
The troubled son of Ryan O’Neal and Farrah Fawcett faced a judge for yet another case of assault that could land him in deeper legal trouble, RadarOnline.com can report exclusively.
Redmond O’Neal appeared on Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, Aug. 1 for a felony assault charge, but his Early Disposition Conference hearing was continued to Sept. 12.
According to prosecutors, O’Neal, 33, assaulted someone while he was in a Los Angeles jail on April 20. The alleged victim of the attack was not a deputy or an inmate.
During Wednesday's five-minute hearing, a bald O’Neal fidgeted in his seat and avoided the judge’s gaze as he was asked by the court whether he understood his right to a speedy preliminary hearing within 10 days of his Sept. 12 appearance.
“Yes,” O’Neal replied.
When asked by the judge whether he understood that he has the right to be arraigned within 60 days of the preliminary hearing, O’Neal replied, “I don’t know.”
“Ask your attorney,” the judge told O’Neal.
O’Neal looked confused at first, but replied yes after the public defender nodded her head.
Before the brief hearing began, the public defender asked O’Neal if he has appeared in mental health court before.
O’Neal, who looked confused by the question, responded, “Naw.”
O’Neal is already facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from an alleged crime spree in Los Angeles from May 2 until he was arrested on May 8.
During that week, prosecutors allege O’Neal attempted to stabbed a man with a glass bottle in the Palms area of Los Angeles and punched another man who was in the same area.
On May 4, prosecutors said O’Neal allegedly stabbed another man and repeatedly stabbed a fourth man in separate attacks in Venice. Three days later, O’Neal allegedly threatened an employee at a Venice Beach coffee shop.
On May 8, prosecutors said O’Neal brandished a knife at an employee at a convenience store in Santa Monica and demanded cash. He was arrested by authorities the same day.
In an amended criminal complaint related to the alleged crime spree, prosecutors charged O’Neal with one count of attempted murder, one count of second-degree robbery and making criminal threats, and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon with a knife, a broken glass bottle and a stabbing device.
O’Neal was also charged with six misdemeanor counts, including possession of a smoking device, possession of injection and ingestion device, battery and exhibiting a deadly weapon and two counts of possessing methamphetamine.
Prosecutors said O’Neal faces a maximum sentence of 22 years in prison if convicted of all of the charges related to the alleged crime spree. The hearing for O’Neal's attempted murder case has been placed on hold until O’Neal faces a different judge, who will consider various reports on whether O’Neal is even mentally competent to stand trial.
In the meantime, O’Neal will remain in a Los Angeles county jail with a bail set for more than $1.3 million. None of O’Neal’s famous family members were in the courtroom on Wednesday.
