Prince Philip has been hospitalized due to a nasty infection, RadarOnline.com can report.
"The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London last night, as a precautionary measure, for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition," said a palace spokesman in statement released this morning to PEOPLE.
Buckingham Palace announced that the 96-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth is ill yet in "good spirits" and "disappointed to be missing the State Opening of Parliament and Royal Ascot."
Just yesterday, the prince was seen enjoying his time at Royal Ascot races, next to his longtime wife.
As RadarOnline.com previously reported, Philip has suffered several illness in recent years, but he has always bounced back to stand by the Queen's side. In December, however, the pair canceled public appearances after they both came down with severe colds.
Just last month, Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Philip would retire from his royal duties later this year after serving over 70 years in public service.
Queen Elizabeth's private secretary revealed that Prince Philip "has decided that he will no longer carry out public engagements from the autumn of this year. In taking this decision, The Duke has the full support of The Queen."
