Chuck Berry, one of the pioneers of rock 'n' roll, died on Saturday at age 90, as the New York Times reported.

On a sad day for early rock fans, the St. Charles County Police Department in Missouri confirmed Berry's death on its Facebook page. The department said it responded to a medical emergency Berry's home at about 12:40 p.m. on March 18.

He was declared dead after lifesaving measures couldn't revive the musician, police said.

Berry had a string of hits in the 1950s, including "Maybellene," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Rock and Roll Music," and "Johnny B. Goode." He influenced such later musical superstars as The Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

In 1972, the singer known for his strut walk on stage with his guitar also tickled his fans with the suggestive novelty hit, "My Ding-a-Ling."

Berry had a never give up performing attitude but he hadn't recorded in a long time. Just last year, he announced he would release his first album in 38 years according to The Guardian.  He implied it would be his last.

Berry had been married to his wife Thelmetta Suggs since 1948 and they had four children.

The legendary musician also survived scandal during his long his life, as RadarOnline.com has reported.
