Rodney King and Dawn Marie Jean dated for six years and planned to wed before they broke up two years ago, but the pair stayed in touch, and in an exclusive interview, Dawn Marie says King was "troubled" in the months before his death.

As RadarOnline.com has reported, King died this morning, in what may have been a drowning accident. He was the face of the Los Angeles riots that ripped the city apart in 1992.

"I'm in shock right now," Dawn marie tells RadarOnline.com exclusively.  "This is all so fresh.

"I just talked to him was about a month ago. He was obviously a little bit troubled.

"Rodney always tried to make it sound like everything was alright when we spoke.  He only wanted to talk bout the good things. But I could tell by his voice things weren't good."

A spokeswoman for the Rialto, CA PD has told us that King's current fiancé, Cynthia Kelley, called 911 at 5:25 am Sunday and reported she'd found Rodney at the bottom of his pool.

Cops and paramedics responded immediately but they were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.
