You thought Reese Witherspoon couldn't be controversial? Think again.

The Water For Elephants beauty, accepting the Generation Award at Sunday's MTV Movies Awards in Los Angeles, surprised the crowd and viewers by breaking from her normally-vanilla demeanor in dropping an F-bomb and taking a few shots at Young Hollywood.

Patrick Dempsey, Chelsea Handler and Rob Pattinson presented Witherspoon, 35, with the lofty honors.

"I have the three most ridiculous people on earth giving me this award," she said.

Earlier, Pattinson had joked that before his Twilight breakout, his scenes in Witherspoon's 2004 film Vanity Fair wound up on the cutting room floor.

"Seven years later we worked together on a movie called Water For Elephants and you played my mother," the British hunk joked. "I didn't cut you out, but I did f*** you!"

In retort, when accepting her award, Witherspoon told the dashing Englishman, "You're the best motherf***** in Hollywood!"

The Oscar-winner showed her old school values in proclaiming, “I just want to say to all the girls out there, I know it’s cool to be bad, I get it ... but it's also possible to make it in Hollywood without a reality show!

“When I came up in this business, if you had a sex tape, you were embarrassed and you hid it under your bed,” she said. “And if you take naked pictures of yourself with your cell phone, you hide your face!

(Interesting note: Chelsea Handler -- one of the people presenting her with the award -- herself has a sex tape).

“It’s possible to be a good girl, I’m gonna try to make it cool!”
