Christian Bale took home the Best Supporting Actor trophy at Friday night's 16 Annual VH1 Critics' Choice Awards for his stellar performance in the fact-based The Fighter.  And in accepting his award, Bale revealed that Alice Ward, his character's real-life mother, almost died last week. You can watch the video here on RadarOnline.com.

Bale was uncharacteristically soft and sentimental in his acceptance speech. He repeatedly thanked the Ward family for allowing a movie to be made about them. Mark Wahlberg stars in The Fighter as boxer Micky Ward. Bale plays Dicky, the addict brother who trains him.  Mom Alice Waters and her daughters play important roles in the story as well.

Christian then revealed that Alice Ward was in the hospital, and had actually been dead for "30 minutes!"  It was Dicky who saved her, Bale insisted.  He shouted at her "'Ma, wake up!'

"That is one tough cookie." Bale said.

It seemed only fitting that Melissa Leo's portrayal of "tough cookie" Alice Ward eared her the Critics' Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress.
