Comedy’s controversy rods converged Thursday on Chelsea Lately, as host Chelsea Handler sat down for a chat with another outspoken, eyebrow-raising observer of pop culture, Kathy Griffin.
Both comics made headlines this month for their sharp-tongued, celeb-razzing ways: Griffin was booed at VH1's Divas Salute the Troops for joking about Bristol Palin's weight gain during her Dancing With The Stars run, while Handler called Angelina Jolie a home-wrecking "c---" during a stand-up gig in New Jersey.
"I made several scandalous jokes, as I like to do -- and I stand by all of them," Griffin said, referencing how she called Palin "the white Precious," a reference to the full-figured star of the critically-acclaimed film, Gabourey Sidibe.
"By the way, that's hilarious," the E! host said.
Both of the women addressed recent jabs from media pundits that their humor borders on bullying.
Griffin said, "I think it's ironic that somebody would call me a bully, when there's a big difference between being a comedian and bullying -- it's our job."
Handler admitted she doesn't take anything she says seriously.
"I'm a ridiculous person," Handler said. "If you take anything any comedian says seriously, you're stupid."
Griffin said that Saturday Night Live writers and late night talk show hosts tell the same jokes with virtually no uproar.
Handler said, "Bullying -- I hate that word, bullying, but I didn't know people were calling us that -- is being a bully to someone who's defenseless, a poor little person who's done nothing wrong, not the people who are a-------!
"Some people are a-------!" Handler said. "When you act irresponsibly and run around the world like Lindsay Lohan, you're gonna get made fun of by me."
